This was The Who's first single under that name (on their previous one, "Zoot Suit" backed with "I'm the Face," the group was known as The High Numbers). It was produced by Shel Talmy, an American who became a major figure in the London music scene in the 1960s. He produced numerous hits for The Kinks, "Friday on My Mind" by the Easybeats, and "My Generation" and "The Kids Are Alright," among other songs, for The Who. He also wrote the B side of "I Can't Explain," "Bald Headed Woman" -- a riff on a traditional blues song recorded by The Kinks a year before this version by The Who.
