The song, Biko, is a musical eulogy. It was inspired by the death of the South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko in police custody on September 12, 1977. Gabriel wrote the song after hearing of Biko's death on the news. It was banned in South Africa, where the government saw it as a threat to security. If you are a collector of banned music, Peter Gabriel's Melt album is one that you want in your library.
