Wie der legendäre John Peel einst über The Fall sagte: "Immer anders, immer gleich", so könnte man dasselbe auch von Darkthrone sagen. Die Dinge ändern sich, die Zeiten ändern sich, die Menschen ändern sich, und doch bleiben die norwegischen Black-Metal-Legenden trotzig und ewig Darkthrone, auch wenn sie frisch und neu klingen und auf ihrem 19. Album Eternal Hails gerade mal fünf Tracks in 45 Minuten abliefern.

Seit ihrer Gründung 1986 als Black Death in Kolboton, Norwegen, sind Darkthrone Meister ihrer Kunst. Nachdem sie den Death Metal des 1991er Debütalbums Soulside Journey zugunsten eines primitiveren Black Metal-Sounds auf dem im darauffolgenden Jahr erschienenen A Blaze In The Northern Sky abgelegt hatten, trugen sie mit Alben wie Under A Funeral Moon von 1993 und dem Nachfolger Transilvanian Hunger dazu bei, den Black Metal in den 90ern zu definieren. Wahrlich, Darkthrone bleiben einzigartig, sogar in ihrem eigenen Kanon.

Auf Eternal Hails spiegeln die längeren, doomigeren Songs die Liebe von Schlagzeuger Fenriz zum Doom wider, sie nehmen sich Zeit, um ihren Punkt zu machen. Für Fenriz reicht das, was er und sein Mitstreiter Nocturno Culto ausgeheckt haben, sogar noch weiter zurück als die Entdeckung des Black Metals, zu den Klängen der 70er Jahre und den freizügigeren Klängen von Bands, die mit expansiveren Themen spielen. Das hat die Songs nicht nur länger gemacht, sondern sie von Grund auf zu einem ganz anderen Biest gemacht. "Als ich als Kind mit Metal aufgewachsen bin, habe ich immer nach Bands mit langen Songs gesucht. Black Sabbath hatten viele, und Celtic Frosts 'Dawn Of Meggido' hatte einen langen Song, also legte ich das im Plattenladen auf und entdeckte eine andere Dimension des Metal. Candlemass' 'Epicus Doomicus Metallicus' hatte nur lange Songs, also glaube ich, dass ich das gekauft habe, ohne es mir überhaupt anzuhören, und es war einer meiner besten Käufe überhaupt - eine ewige Inspiration für meine gesamte Karriere."

"Für uns ist es ein bisschen logisch geworden, schwer zu erklären, aber man kann sich auf eine andere Art des Hörens einstellen", sagt Nocturno Culto. "Ein dreiminütiger Song ist nichts, woran wir im Moment denken. Wir mögen es so. Für den Moment."

With the highly revered Norwegians remaining ever-dedicated to the art of the riff after 35 years of existence, Darkthrone return for album number nineteen and a new dose of metallic godliness. On the back of 2019’s triumphant ‘Old Star’ opus, the duo of Nocturno Culto and Fenriz present a 41-minute maelstrom of Epic Black Heavy Metal across five sprawling compositions. Organic and dynamic, the album is an exploration of the very finest vintage metal and the best of doom, all delivered in the unmistakable Darkthrone style, whilst also incorporating instruments such as the Moog to further expand upon these soundscapes.

Eschewing the process of using their own Necrohell II studios – which has served the band so well over the last 15 years – and welcoming a change of environment and the opportunity to experiment with new ideas, ‘Eternal Hails’ was recorded at Chaka Khan Studio in Oslo, and engineered by Ole Ovstedal & Silje Høgevold, breathing new life into the sound while retaining the essence of Darkthrone’s natural, raw feeling.

The cover artwork features the piece “Pluto and Charon” (1972), from renowned science fiction artist David A. Hardy; a hugely inspirational image for both Fenriz & Nocturno Culto spanning several decades, and this also stands as a symbolic link between the genre-bending styles apparent on Darkthrone’s earliest works, to those same traits evident on ‘Eternal Hails’.
