This handsome and rare LP from Vox (PL 7230, US pressing, black/silver label, mono) features Wilhelm Furtwangler’s legendary “live” performance of Franck’s Symphony in D minor, recorded with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in concert in the Grosser Saal of the Musikverein, Vienna, on 28 January 1945.

One can hear the hall in this remarkable recordings, which is imbued with a tremendous sense of occasion – it remains a landmark in the Franck discography.

The cover art was executed by Robert J. Velde and the liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only, were written by Fred Lowe. The copyright date is given as 1952.

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is minor bumping/wear at corners, some edge wear, shelf wear and mild discoloration. However, there are no bends, seam splits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's

The condition of the LP is EXCELLENT. Visually, there are numerous hairline marks, some scuff-like marks and a few small non-sounding scratches. The labels are both clean. In terms of sound, the surfaces are not CD silent, and there is light surface noise as one would expect from a nearly 70-year-old Vox pressing. In the first movement, a momentary low swish can be heard for perhaps 5 or 6 revolutions, but there are no tics or pops. If you must have flawless surfaces, then please do not buy this LP - overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy, and really about as fine a copy as one is like to find nowadays.
