Items of Note

Elvis won only three Grammy’s during his lifetime. Some of the history of the Grammy’s may reveal why Elvis received so few. The first Grammy’s were awarded on March 4, 1959 for the accomplishments of musical artists during 1958. Elvis, by this time, was the greatest musical artist in the country and was in the middle of his active duty in the army. If the Grammy’s had begun a few years earlier, it is easy to imagine that Elvis would have won Best New Artist for 1956, and that Jailhouse Rock would have won Record of the Year for 1957. However, it also makes sense that he likely would NOT have won Album of the Year for his first self-titled album in 1956 due to the controversial nature of Rock ‘n Roll at the time and the fact that Rock was not recognized as its own genre until 1980.

It also is understandable that Elvis was overlooked by the Grammy’s during his army years. Finally, the songs and albums that did win during those early years, for the most part, were not very “Rock ‘n Rolly”. Although, personally, I think both “It’s Now or Never” and “Are You Lonesome Tonight” should have been viable candidates for Record of the Year for 1960 (“The Theme from 'A Summer Place,' " by Percy Faith won that year).
