"JAMES TAYLOR” self-titled debut LP by James Taylor
James Taylor was the first solo artist to be signed to the Beatles' new Apple Records label. In late 1968, his sophisticated self-titled LP illustrated the introspective singer/songwriter genre that dominated pop music in the early and mid-1970s. This is the LP that launched his career as an outstanding singer/songwriter.
He was one of Apple Records’ newly discovered talents. This LP was produced by Peter Asher, of the 1960s recording duet of Peter & Gordon, and brother of Jane Asher, Paul McCartney’s girlfriend.
This LP is Apple SAPCOR 3.
It is a UK PRESSING that was released December 6, 1968.
The LP in this auction is the FIRST UK PRESSING of this LP.
We know this because:
On the front cover, “JAMES TAYLOR” is in orange not black.
Both of the labels have the printing “Sold in the U.K. subject to resale price conditions, see price lists” printed on them at the top of the labels.
The trail-off vinyl for Side 1 has SAPCOR 3 A-1 and the trail-off for Side 2 has SAPCOR 3 B-1.
The LP contains 12 cuts on it including such GREAT songs as: “Carolina In My Mind”, “Something in the Way She Moves”, “Night Owl”, and “Rainy Day Man”. These songs would eventually be reworked by Taylor several years later.
Paul McCartney played bass on the "Carolina in My Mind" track.
The record comes in its ORIGINAL OUTER LAMINATED, CENTER-LOADING, INTERNAL FLIP-BACK GATE-FOLD COVER.
The GATE-FOLD COVER is in NICE VG+ Condition. There is light overall wear. The cover has small “pushes” on the top right corner, top left corner and bottom right corner. There is a small repaired tear at the base of the spine which may lower the grade a bit. The spine is nice without the wear and flaking that often occurs with this laminated cover. The lyrics are printed inside the gate-fold cover which is quite clean and white.
The VINYL is graded NEAR MINT to NEAR MINT MINUS (NM-) with LOTS OF GLOSS! There are just a few very light/slight surface hairlines/scuffs.
The ORIGINAL UK PAPER INNER SLEEVE is included with the patent number and “MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN printed on it. It has 3-inch splits on two edges and on the bottom.
A VERY NICE 1st UK PRESSING OF JAMES TAYLOR’S DEBUT LP ON THE APPLE RECORDS LABEL FOR SOMEONE’S VINYL COLLECTION!
