VINYL GRADING STANDARDS
Mint (M) -- Still sealed and vinyl unplayed. The LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects such as cut-out holes, or saw cuts either. Original promotional and price stickers may be affixed, but only to the shrink wrap and not to the cover itself.
Near Mint (NM or M-) -- A nearly perfect record. The record should show no obvious signs of wear. An LP cover or 45 sleeve should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. Basically, an LP in near mint condition looks as if you just got it home from a new record store and removed the shrink wrap.
Very Good ++ (VG++ or EX) -- Intermediate between NM and VG+.
Very Good Plus (VG+) -- Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. Any surface noise is minor and incidental. An LP cover may have slight signs of wear, and may also have a cut-out hole, indentation or corner cut. Still a very nice record.
Very Good (VG) -- The defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident, especially during soft passages and intros, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches that might affect the sound. Picture sleeves or LP covers may have creasing, handwriting, ring print, edge wear, light soiling, etc. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them.
Very Good Minus (VG-) -- Intermediate between VG and G.
Good (G) -- Plays with significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. A cover or sleeve will have multiple defects (such as seam splits, tape, writing, heavy ring wear, staining etc.) will be present.
Poor (P) to Fair (F) -- The record is in very rough condition and may be cracked, warped, and won't play through without skipping or repeating. The picture sleeve may be water damaged, split on all three seams and heavily marred by wear and markings.
