Here on offer are five Benny Goodman albums I picked up back in the days when I was building my record collection. As I purchased these in roughly 2007-08 around the time I started my teaching career, I had expected to use some of these as background music when teaching history (and admittedly, my tastes at the time more closely reflected that of my parents, who were born in 1938 and '42). Many of these copies had migrated from Oregon State University's radio station in Corvallis up to Rainy Day Records in Olympia, Wash., and I happened to snap them up as they made their way into the bins. As I ultimately became a math teacher instead, and my tastes have become more contemporary and folk-based, I look forward to passing these along to a collector who desires affordable and sundry copies of Goodman's work. You'll receive:
Air Play Doctor Jazz Records W2X 40350 Released mid-1986. Gold "demonstration - not for sale" stamp over barcode, plus "KBVR - 9-16-86" written in permanent marker on the front. Records VG+, with light surface wear and very good sound quality throughout. Jacket VG, due to the aforementioned radio markings plus ringwear and light scuffs on the cover. Gatefold. This material came entirely from transcription discs recorded between December 1936 and October 1938, around the time of Goodman's famous Carnegie Hall concert.
The King of Swing - Vol. 1 Columbia Records CL 817 Released ca. 1956. Original pressing with 6-eye label. Record VG, with some surface scratches present, and a little bit of distortion audible on the first two tracks of side 1. The inside tracks sound remarkably good, however, and may not have been played as much on this copy. Jacket VG, with some light creasing at the corners, a small amount of tape at the top of the spine to help keep the flipback material intact, and a small pen mark up by the word "SWING" on the front. Features material from Goodman's concert series around the time of the Carnegie Hall concert in 1937-38. Again, a compilation of transcription disc items.
Slipped Disc, 1945-46 (with the Benny Goodman Sextet) Columbia Jazz Masterpieces CJ 44292 Released mid-1988. Gold promo stamp through the barcode, with "KBVR" in permanent marker on the back. Record VG+, with a small amount of radio writing on the label, and an excellent gloss! This looks fairly pristine given its origin. Jacket VG, due to edgewear, marks from old label adhesive, and the radio letters. As the Big Band Era ended in the mid-1940s, Goodman pivoted to working with smaller groupings of musicians as an outlet for his continued contributions to jazz. This album contains remasters of that (still pre-tape) work.
Benny Goodman Sextet Columbia Jazz Masterpieces CJ 40379 Released ca. September 1986. This was one of the first twelve Jazz Masterpiece albums to be issued by Columbia for its new series. Includes the insert advertising this. Record VG+, with light surface wear at most. Sounded great on my setup. Jacket VG-, with somewhat heavier edge and surface wear, invisible tape along the spine, yet another gold promo stamp, label adhesive residue, and radio writing in permanent ink, dated 2-10-87 from KBVR 88.7. (Some wag at the station also editorialized a bit here as well, writing "I was a real jerk" in small ballpoint letters in a mock speech balloon next to Goodman's face.) This material updates Goodman's work to the 1950s, specifically November 1950 to October 1952, with fresh covers of songs that date back to the 1920s and '30s. Probably some of Goodman's first works to be recorded on magnetic tape rather than directly to master discs.
Live at Carnegie Hall - 40th Anniversary Concert London Records 2PS 918/19 Released mid-1978. In Phase 4 stereo. Records pressed in Great Britain. Records VG+ to VG++, with light surface noise occasionally noticeable in the background. Jacket VG+, with light edgewear. This album appears to have come from someone in connection with the Brown Co. Library in Indiana, based on the note from "Maurine to Dad" dated 1/3/79 inside the gatefold. (I picked it up at a record store in Bellingham, Wash., in about 2007.) Recorded 40 years plus one day after the famed 1938 concert, this new Carnegie Hall recording updates the content to include some contemporary surprises, including "Send in the Clowns," "Rocky Raccoon," and "Yesterday" from the songbooks of Broadway and the Beatles. The rest is predominantly what you would expect, with Benny's standard opening and closing combo ("Let's Dance" and "Goodbye," respectively), "Roll 'Em," "Star Dust," the obligatory "Sing Sing Sing," and other callbacks to the songs and sounds of the 1930s and '40s.

"Quality items at reasonable prices from an eccentric merchant!"
As a math teacher and long-time record buyer with a definite passion for both vocations, I am excited to continue to make available LPs I have collected over the last twenty-two years but now need to winnow from my shelves. The items I will be posting include quite a range of genres and interests - soundtracks, specialty records, and albums ranging from the typical mainstream to the unexpectedly weird. Check back often to see what surprises I've got in store!
Please note my conditions of sale:
-I use Goldmine standards to rate my albums, and I seek to do so conservatively. Items will often receive both a visual check and a playgrade, so that I can review the material one last time and also listen for any differences between audible quality and my visual perception of an album's surface. If there are any potential flaws in an item, I will make sure you know about those upfront. As a rule, I will not attempt to sell records that rate below VG for the total package (unless the item in question is rare or hard to come by). Because I deal largely in used stock and will be thorough in explaining an item's condition, please note that all sales are "as is" and final - returns are not accepted.
-I ship through USPS services to destinations in the U.S. only. All records will be packed sturdily with quality outer cardboard, with records and innersleeves removed from jackets to avoid seam splits on used items. Because of the demands of my work schedule, shipments typically go out twice a week, by Wednesday (for albums paid for during the previous weekend) and by Saturday (for all later payments). Whenever possible, I crank out shipments faster than this, so rest assured you'll get your order quickly.
-I will accept payments for items through PayPal only. If you win one or more of my auctions, please make sure items are paid for within 7 days of the listing's end. Please note that I open failure-to-pay cases against those who do not pay or make any attempt to communicate with me within my stated timeframe. Please do not bid or commit to buy if you don't intend to follow through with a payment.
-Shipping will be at cost to the buyer, through Media Mail. I charge a starting fee of $4.16 for one album, then 50 cents per each additional LP in your order.
-I will always be willing to combine shipping on multiple wins/purchases. Just make sure to request an invoice prior to completing your purchase.
-A word to the wise on how I consider best offers: I often accept offers up to 30% below the listing value for my items. Please avoid lowball offers!
-The bottom line: I will make every attempt to insure your satisfaction as my customer. Let me know of any problems prior to posting negative or neutral feedback, as this will help me to refine my services and better serve my fellow record collectors out there. Enjoy!
