Art Blakey was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1919. He began his professional career at the age of twenty and worked successively for Fletcher Henderson, Mary Lou Williams, Billy Eckstine, Lucky Millinder and Buddy de Franco. In 1955, he created his famous Jazz Messengers quintet which, during more than ten years, won an international success. Art Blakey formed an impressive number of young musicians by giving them a chance to play in his band. Most of great modern jazz musicians; Horace Silver, Doug Watkins, Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Bobby Simmons, Lee Morgan, Kenny Dorham, Bill Hardmann, Freddie Hubbard, Johnny Griffin... come from the Messengers. If the members of Jazz Messengers changed often, Art Blakey knew, thanks to his extraordinary personality, conserve the original style of the group since his creation.
This session recorded in 1957 in New-York presents the fantastic jazz drummer Art Blakey, leading his Jazz Messengers.
