ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome LP – in a "red stereo" jacket – from Deutsche Grammophon (SLPM 138 658, German pressing, tulip label, stereo, original inner sleeve included) features Evgeny Marvinsky’s legendary account of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor Op. 64, made with the mighty Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra, vividly recorded in the opulent acoustics of the Grosser-Saal of the Musikverein, Vienna on 9-10 November 1960.
The reverse side of the jacket carries the publication date 11/62 and contains extensive liner notes (uncredited), provided in English, German, and French. The striking cover art is similarly uncredited.
There are strong claims for Mravinsky’s 1956 mono account (on DG), but this stereo re-make is scarcely less fine and better recorded, a thrilling performance steeped in true slavic ardor.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is slight wear at corners, as well as mild discoloration to the rear panel. However, there are no seam splits, owners' markings, or other defects and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a very fine copy and the playback is superb. If you must have CD-silent surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a lovely NM collector's copy.
