ORIGINAL 1966 "3rd STATE" STEREO EDITION OF...

YESTERDAY AND TODAY

(Capitol Records ST - 2556 STEREO - black / colorband label)

This is an West Coast pressing and bears RIAA #5 on the rear cover.

Tracks include:

Drive My Car   /  I'm Only Sleeping  /  Nowhere Man  /  Dr. Robert  /  Yesterday  /  Act Naturally  /  And Your Bird Can Sing  /  We Can Work It Out   /  Day Tripper  /  What Goes On  /  If I Needed Someone

This is a "3rd state" pressing. Upon the album’s original 1966 release, the replacement white "trunk photo" album slick was peeled back revealing the controversial “butcher photo” underneath.

BUTCHER COVERS DO NOT FOLLOW THE GENERAL RULE THAT A BEATLES MONO ALBUM ON CAPITOL IS MORE VALUABLE THAN ITS STEREO EQUIVALENT. THIS IS BECAUSE THE INITIAL 750,000 RUN OF THIS ALBUM WAS PRODUCED AT A RATIO OF APPROXIMATELY 5:1 IN FAVOR OF MONO OVER STEREO. IN THE SUMMER OF 1966, MONO STILL DOMINATED STEREO IN THE TEEN MARKET.

A STEREO 3rd STATE BUTCHER (regardless of condition) IS AT LEAST FIVE TIMES SCARCER AND SIGNIFICANTLY MORE VALUABLE THAN A MONO BUTCHER.

THE WEST COAST  RIAA #5 COVERS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A MORE DIFFICULT "PEEL" THAN THE EAST COAST COVERS, DUE TO THE TYPE OF GLUE USED ON THE WEST COAST.

This cover was successfully peeled in 2006 (upon the album's 40th anniversary) to decent effect. Unfortunately, it suffered water damage in 2012 as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

In February 2014, the cover was carefully restored to its current condition. Although it does have several defects which were part of the original 2006 peel, the "butcher photo" boasts a collectible and overall presentable appearance. Appropriate replacement sections were carefully applied while other imperfections were left alone to guarantee the cover's originality.

Spine is intact with some age-wear. Title and matrix number are quite legible. The bottom seam, once completely split, has now been repaired.

The back cover has some water damage around the center. However, text is still readable as well as the "RIAA #5" and "Full Dimensional Stereo" banner.

In addition, a copy of the 1966 recall letter from Capitol records, explaining the substitute "trunk" cover, is also included.

Vinyl is in "VG" condition with some light surface noise and bright, punchy mono sound Despite some water damage on the labels, the vinyl was professionally cleaned and has been play-tested to ensure a quality listening experience.
