General condition codes

M = Mint minus or near mint – exceptional vinyl – virtually unmarked as new, sounds perfect, but has been cleaned & test played. Labels & sleeve as new.

X = Excellent - 'new' vinyl probably sounds as good as the day it was made, but not quite perfect. Vinyl may have very light background noise & light surface marks. One obvious click is allowed [per track] before it is downgraded to 'V' condition.
Labels & sleeve - nearly as new, but sleeve often with light creases & friction [label] ring or vinyl impression ring from years in storage.
SS = shop 'display' sleeve – same as 'XX' but it will have spine creases & shop sticker [see note below] - study scans.

V = Very good - exactly that - somewhere between 'X' & 'G' - 'new' vinyl / label / sleeve - will have slight imperfection, with detail described above - used vinyl will either have slightly more background noise and a slight deterioration of sound quality through being played often - or more background noise but no other obvious deterioration of sound quality of the track which will cover most of the background crackle - as in vinyl that has been mistreated but not played much - extra info in description above - used label / sleeve often stickered or marked & with creased or scuffed sleeve - check scans.

G = Good - 'new' vinyl will have a problem detailed above - used vinyl will have both more background noise and a deterioration in sound quality through much use - but still plays well - label / sleeve - tatty

F = Fair - [for the more genteel collector, apparently.] - for the rest of you it's the word you first thought of, and the vinyl is offered purely as a Filler ! [nasty but still plays] - labels - floated-off & missing - cover - fermented & binned. [Wet storage]

D = Damaged - label / sleeve          DR = damaged repaired / reinforced original sleeve [with pva glued internal plain paper strips]  [the original sleeve is always sent to maintain authenticity, unless it is beyond repair.].

KJ = Inkjet sleeve - either a shop display sleeve or a scanned & printed copy of an original picture or company sleeve too damaged to use. Any damage may also show on the inkjet version. Print is not waterproof, colours weaker than the real thing, & supplied for reference only.

PW = New plain white paper sleeve LC = Ex dj poly-lined card sleeve

Feedback appreciated and returned.  Notes -

REISSUES condition code refers to the current vinyl - not the original source quality. Some source recordings - especially for 1950's reissues into the pre-digital early 1980's - were often dubbed from other records or from raw and basic old recording tapes - not the digitally remastered quality available today. [where necessary an additional code or comment is given in brackets after the current vinyl code for dubious source quality]

PICTURE DISC & Foil sandwich discs reproduction quality is usually not quite as good as conventional vinyl. The thin clear outside layers normally have more background crackle, plus any uneven content of the sandwich layers can cause light thumps - especially die cut internal shapes. Solid coloured vinyl should be as good as solid black coloured vinyl. [ also note that clear vinyl goes brown with exposure to fluorescent tube lights over time, not sure about other lighting, but choose display site carefully ! ]

CHICK-A-BOOM shop price stickers were of the removable type - when they were stuck on 20-30 years ago - but that is no longer guaranteed ! Now they will almost certainly take off the glossy layer of a sleeve if tried. They are probably best removed with the aid of steam - paper first - then gooey remains - but even then may well leave an impression or square of slightly more vivid colour on the sleeve - where the sticker has protected a display sleeve from shop light bleaching.
Other price & record company stickers were normally permanent.
