This is the only known original master pressing of the famous / notorious "Shave 'Em Dry" Made at the end of a Lucille Bogan - Bessie Jackson recording session.
Long believed - INCORRECTLY - to have been recorded during a March, 1935 session (see "Blues and Gospel Records"). My discovery of this original pressing, many years ago, provided information that this recording was made at an earlier date. The recording was actually made at the end of her July 19, 1933 recording session, accompanied by Walter Roland. It was recorded/pressed in the Brunswick/ARC "TO" matrix series ("Test Only") The original matrix number "TO 1317" is pressed in the shellac of this one-sided 10-inch shellac pressing. It was never intended to be released. The Brunswick/ARC "TO" Test Only matrix series was used for private & personal recordings, talent tests, equipment tests, and other recordings not intended for release. Original TO recording ledger notes "Test for A.E. Satherly" with the date July 19, 1933 (Arthur E. Satherly was a recording pioneer in both "race" and country recordings) Inferior bootleg dubbings have appeared for many years, often as dubbings of dubbings of dubbings. This is the only known original master pressing. ( Oddly, this was sold to me many years ago by a New York record dealer who thought it was Pearl Bailey ! ) Over the years I've told some collector friends of this find, along with the correct recording date. I was once told that Ms. Bogan was extremely drunk at the time, and when she finished with this recording she turned and threw up into the piano. The recording itself continues into the run-off groove ! Probably one of the "dirtiest" or most pornographic recordings ever made, even compared to today's low standards. Here's a chance for the consummate "Blues Collector" to own a probably unique blues relic. The condition is a clean V+ and plays loud, clear and strong.
