Naked Lies review from Crohinga Well 12 Magazine: Belgium
Never heard of this one before, Karlis is the pseudonymfor the couple Richard and Kathleen Karlis
Richard and Kathleen wrote most of the ten songs on the LP. Richard played all bass guitars, different types of guitars, synthesizer, tape machines and special effects...Kathleen sang, recited and played synthesizer...among the guest musicians who played either guitar, keyboard or drums on one or more of the tracks we find the name of Simones (see CW11 for more info)...
Naked Lies ...is an album of strange dark atmosphere and psychedelic soundscapes: acid rock guitar, layers of weird keyboards, nature sounds, backs words pieces, and the voice of Kathleen Karlis, which has similarities with that of Patti Smith (she even covers Ask The Angles). All of this comes to a head in "Last Call" and "Locomotion"...a muted blusey track with bizarre, echoing vocals that turn into a surrealistic, dreamy evocation with spacey keys and Kathleen reciting a nightmarish sombre tale. I quite like it for its unusual atmospheres and psychedelic context, but I can understand that some might find it a bit too "arty-farty" (Like some Patti Smith albums were, in places). Of course that is all a matter of personal taste...so find out for yourself and try to score on of the 500 copies of this LP...
