HMV UK Mono LP ALP 1104, Gioconda De Vito plays Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major, Op.77, with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Rudolf Schwarz.
The sleeve is really rather fragile, having endured rips, tears, creasing and exposure to damp, as can be seen in the pictures. There is also evidence of dried out damp inside the sleeve. There is a little loss on the back opening edge, but the flipbacks are still there. The sleeve grades Good to Good minus.
The vinyl is, pleasantly, in much better shape than the sleeve! Both sides have minor hairlines and skating lines and a few more obvious light marks of varying degrees, but none are deep nor cause any, jumps, skips or sticks.
Both sides play very strongly indeed, with side one having a little repetitive crackle on each rotation that does dissipate somewhat after the first half of the side, but is present throughout. Side two has a little background crackle throughout, but not too obtrusive, and not a repetitive cycle as on side one. Other than this, there is the occasional light click and pop, and the occasional short section of light distortion, usually in loud sections, but audio really is very enjoyable, showcasing De Vito’s considerable talent to excellent effect. Overall the vinyl certainly grades VG.
