UK HMV mono LP, ALP 1104, on the gold/red label. Gioconda de Vito, violin, with Rudolf Schwarz conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra in Brahms’ Concerto in D major, Op.77, for Violin and Orchestra, 2N/4N matrix suffixes.
Sleeve has been repaired due to damage, as can be seen in the pictures. Most of it is present, and the back is more intact than the front.
The vinyl is flat, no warp, and plays very well, despite light but obvious marks on both sides. No jumps or skips, but there is consistent, light surface noise and regular clicks and pops; however, this does not detract too much from enjoyment of the music, and audio remains strong throughout. There are several more obvious lines at the start of side 1, and these do cause a few periods of repetitive clicks, as is also the case at the start of side 2, which has the most obvious scratch marks, but the ‘zig-zag’ lines in one of my pictures seem to have little or no extra adverse effect on the audio.
Not a perfect copy of this rare classic, then, but certainly still an enjoyable listen and, all in all, worthwhile as a collection-filling, but eminently playable, copy. Visually, the vinyl grades Good minus, but audio grades Good Plus to VG minus in places.
UK Record Collector grading guidelines adhered to.
