1991: Southern rapper Scarface dropped his debut album, Mr. Scarface Is Back, on Oct. 8, 1991. Having already established himself in the rap scene as a member of Houston-based trio The Geto Boys -- the guys dropped their seminal album, We Can't Be Stopped, in July of the same year -- Scarface thought it was the perfect time to venture out on his own musically. The result was a 12-track debut via Rap-A-Lot Records.
The album had no features and was executive produced by Scarface with help from Paid in Full's Crazy C, proving that the project was truly a passion project for Face Mob. Face's brash delivery of gangsta rap enthralled rap fans for 45 minutes with menacing street tales told in a way only he could.
Mr. Scarface Is Back was driven by two singles, "Mr. Scarface" and "A Minute to Pray and a Second to Die," and as a whole debuted at No. 51 on the Billboard 200. Though critics didn't initially hail his debut as a "classic," Mr. Scarface Is Back did receive 4 mics from The Source and by 1993, it was certified gold in sales by the RIAA.
Twenty-seven years removed from its debut, Mr. Scarface Is Back stands as the unforgettable jumpstart for Scarface's long and illustrious career.
