Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelly were the first musicians from Europe that really "got" American Jazz. Django was a gypsy that had been injured in a fire and his hand was mangled so that he could only use a couple of fingers on his fret hand, but that didn't stop him from becoming one of the best jazz guitarists ever. It is said that when he first heard Louis Armstrong's West End Blues, he wept, and was hooked on jazz forever after. Died way too young, but left an indelible mark on the jazz world.
