More often than
not, commissioned works demand a good measure of self-discipline from
composers, musicians and producers. This certainly goes for the talented
all-rounder Chuck Mangione who likes to take care of everything himself. The
soundtrack to the biographical film The Children of Sanchez is just such a
commissioned work - and a team of top instrumentalists spent many long days
and nights in the studio to ensure its success. The result was a mammoth work
of no less than 23 hours duration, highlights of which are presented on this
double album. Tinted with a Latin-American hue, the melodies are presented in constantly
varying sound spectra which combine the well-tried with the experimental.
Thundering wind and drum passages, pithy big-band sets, and excursions into
an intoxicating symphonic soundworld are just as much a part of Mangione's
musical language as are the contemplative solo pieces for cello and
flugelhorn. The outstanding sound quality is beyond question; indeed, this recording
was prestigiously named the "Best Audiophile Disc" in the
1970s.." Recording: September 1977 at Kendun Recorders, Burbank,
California by Mick Guzauski / Production: Chuck Mangione."
