This is CHET BAKER & ART PEPPER Playboys LP on World Pacific Records PJ-1234 Mono first press from 1958. This record is part of the World Pacific series and features the sextet, recorded in October 1956, but not released until 1958. On this session, Chet Baker on trumpet, Art Pepper on alto sax, Phil Urso on tenor, Curtis Counce on bass and Lawence Marable, drums. Five of the tunes here were written by Little Bird, Jimmy Heath. The other two, by Art Pepper. Side story here is after this Playboys release, Playboy Magazine suggested they change the title to avoid a lawsuit. Subsequent pressing had a different title and front cover. It was renamed Picture of Heath, in appreciation of the song writer, Jimmy. This adds to the rarity of this LP.
More info can be found on Discogs and All Music. This is Discogs release [r6661337]. Record grades: a modified Golmine. NM,EX, VG++,VG+, VG, VG-, G+,G, G-, F, P
The COVER VG Light shelf wear with really no ring wear. NO SPLITS. The worst defects are the previous owners name on the back and the front top left corner. It seems there was a stapled price tag that when torn off, caused a little damage that included loss of the last number(4) of the catalog number on the back. Tape was applied. A small piece of tape was also applied to the top and bottom of the opening to prevent splits, there are none. I believe, over the 66 years, the tape has dried up and fallen off, leaving the discolored residue. No bends. A ding on the front, left lower corner. Solid cover. I think VG may be a conservative grade. A lot of these covers have major splits. I don't think I can give a VG+ to a cover with prominent writing. The front presents very well , like the photo.
The VINYL VG Play graded both sides. Because of the asking price of this record, I will do something a little different here. I will print the Goldmine record VG grading here, and line by line, I will offer my comments in parenthesis: VG records have more obvious flaws than their counterparts in better shape. They lack most of the original gloss found on factory fresh records. (This record is not factory fresh and has diminished gloss). Groove wear is evident on sight, as are light scratches deep enough to feel with a fingernail. (Some groove wear is evident under a bright light but NO scratches are deep enough to feel with a fingernail.) When played, a VG record has surface noise, and some scratches may be audible, especially in soft passages and during a songs intro and ending. (This record has surface noise with some audible scratches, but not loud pops and loud repetitive ticking.) But the noise will not overpower the music otherwise (True). Off of Goldmine here: Side one has many light scratches and some light surface blemishes. Side two is the same with a few scuffs that are not obvious in the sound. Just listened to both sides and basically, there is light crackle throughout, never getting absolutely quiet. But it was a very enjoyable listen and never felt my stylus was in danger. NO JUMPS OR SKIPS. Not even close. Very sound quality. Checked the discs for any warping and there are no issues. Not giving this a VG- because I could not feel any scratches. Sounds VG. Looks VG. Not VG+.
The LABELS VG+ This is a deep groove pressing. When held on an angle under a bright light, I could only see a few spindle trails and minor spindle hole wear. No writing.
The SLEEVES NM this record comes with a new poly lined Inner sleeve and a new poly outer sleeve.
All records will be mailed in sturdy, recycled record specific mailer boxes with extra padding. Disc will be removed from jacket to eliminate splitting caused by transit shifting. I am happy to combine shipping. This record will go out with USPS Ground Advantage that is insured. Thanks.
