John Coltrane brought a new sound and style to jazz, and he applies it in his own unique way to the standard material of the storehouse of American music gathered from Broadway, Hollywood, and Tin Pan Alley. With the excellent rhythm team of Red Garland, Paul Chambers (both of whom had done so many concert, club and recording dates with him) and Jimmy Cobb, and the Miles-directed flugehorn of Wilbur Harden. Trane puts his personal stamp on numbers not done that often: Henry Nemo's "Don't Take Your Love From Me" and Fred Ahlert's "I'll Get By," and two more familiar yet still not overdone songs, Richard Rodger's "Spring Is Here" adnd Bronislau Kaper's "Inivation." Recording enginneered by Rudy Van Gelder.

JOHN COLTRANE OLE 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION LP ATLANTIC RECORDS 1373 PRESSING SO LONG OUT OF PRINT IT DOESN'T EVER HAVE A BARCODE ON THE JACKET AND WAS PRESSED AT RHINO RECORDS.

That John Coltrane was one of the most important musicians in jazz is no news, of course, to those who have been intimately concerned with jazz music, as laymen or musicians, in recent years. Sometimes, however, it seems as if great sections of the public have the idea that men like Coltrane existed in a vacuum, a musical vacuum in which they merely got on the stand and played, with never a thought in their minds about the problems of their art of their personal style.

In the case of a shy, reticent man like Coltrane, this can be accentuated. It may surprise some to learn that John Coltrane was not only a major jazz musician but a man who was constantly involved in an agonizing reappraisal of his approach to his art.

Coltrane said, "I like to play long... the only thing is, I feel that there might be a need now to have more musical statements going on in the band. I might need another horn, you know. I ran across a funny thing. We went into the Apollo and the guy said, 'You're playin' too long, you got to play twenty minutes.' Now, sometimes we get up and play a song and I play a solo maybe thirty, or at least twenty, minutes. Well, at the Apolllo we ended up playing three songs in twenty minutes! I played all the highlights of the solos that I had been playing in hours, in that length of time. So I think about it. What have I been doing all this time? It's made me think, if I'm going to take an hour to say something I can say in ten minutes, maybe I'd better say it in ten minutes! And then have another horn there and get something else."

"The complicated rhythm patterns and diverse sonic textures on Olé are evidence that John Coltrane was once again charting his own course. His sheer ability as a maverick -- over and beyond his appreciable musical skills -- guides works such as this to new levels, ultimately advancing the entire art form." - Lindsay Planer, allmusic

JOHN COLTRANE PLAYS THE BLUES 180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE STEREO LIMITED EDITION LP

180 Gram Vinyl Cut from the Original Analog Masters by Bernie Grundman!

Trane uses the blues to explore the boundaries of jazz with McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones.

Recorded in 1960 along with "My Favorite Things", "Coltrane Plays the Blues" features "Blues To Bechet", "Blues To Elvin", and "Blues To You" in addition to three other tracks.

"The Coltrane Quartet, three-fourths complete at the time of this recording, had begun its historic rise and had also turned the corner in Coltrane's music, transitioning from the expressive verticality of Giant Steps to the more elongated, long-limbed lyricism that would define his role in the avant-garde. It can come as no surprise that to do so, he engaged the material he'd known longest and best - the blues." - Neil Tesser, author of The Playboy Guide To Jazz

Until now, the complete picture of what happened during the album’s recording session, held on December 9th 1964, has never been revealed. The Complete Masters celebrates the 50th anniversary of the original album release, and finally collects all the previously unavailable outtakes, overdubs, and studio chatter from the session.

Recorded over two days at the Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey in December 1964, the sessions included Coltrane's quartet of Elvin Jones on drums, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and McCoy Tyner on piano.
