Contrary to popular belief, there were no known plans to release Nirvana's MTV Unplugged set as an album before Cobain's death.[] By the time of the band's dissolution, only one song - "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" - had been sanctioned for official release. It was released as a B-side on the "" single in early 1994, which was recalled immediately after Cobain's death.

It is rumored that other Unplugged songs were to be released on a tour in the summer of 1994, supporting Nirvana's appearance.[] The band was to headline the festival, but Cobain pulled out within the weeks before his death in April 1994.
