ARTIST & RELEASE INFO:

The Beach Boys are an American band formed in in 1961. The group's original lineup consisted of brothers , , and , their cousin , and their friend . Emerging at the vanguard of the "", the band's early gained international popularity for distinct and lyrics that evoked a of , cars, and romance. Influenced by -based , 1950s , and , Brian led the band in devising novel approaches to and , experimenting with several ranging from to and . While initially managed by the Wilsons' father , dominated the group's musical direction.

The album and "" single, both released in 1966, featured an intricate and multi-layered sound that established the group as symbols of the , vaunting them to the top level of rock innovators. Following the dissolution of , Brian gradually ceded control to the rest of the band, reducing his input because of and issues. Though the more democratic incarnation of the Beach Boys recorded a string of albums in various music styles that garnered international critical success, the group struggled to reclaim their commercial momentum in America. Since the 1980s, much-publicized legal wrangling over royalties, and use of the band's name transpired.

Dennis drowned in 1983 and Carl died of lung cancer in 1998. After Carl's death, many live configurations of the band fronted by Mike Love and continued to tour into the 2000s while other members pursued solo projects. For the band's 50th anniversary, the surviving co-founders briefly reunited for a and .

The Beach Boys are and one of the most critically acclaimed, commercially successful, and widely influential bands of all time, while stated that their "unerring ability... made them America's first, best rock band." The group had over eighty songs chart worldwide, thirty-six of them US hits (the most by an American rock band), four reaching number-one on the chart. The Beach Boys have sold in excess of 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the and are listed at number 12 on magazine's 2004 list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time". They have received one for (2011). The core quintet of the three Wilsons, Love and Jardine were inducted into the in 1988.

Still Cruisin' is the 26th by , their thirty-fifth official album (counting compilations and live packages), and their last release of the 1980s. It is also the last album of new material released during a brief return to .

Still Cruisin' was left out of Capitol's Beach Boys re-issue campaign in 2000 and 2001, and is currently out of print.

Background

After "" (when released as a single from the film soundtrack) gave the Beach Boys their first number one hit in the US since 1966's "", the band decided to put together an album of recent and classic songs. The classic songs included had been heard in recent films. The songs "", "" and "Island Girl" were recorded for the album by the touring Beach Boys band as well as studio musicians and producer . Due to his ongoing relationship with Dr. , 's lone contribution to this album was "", a song credited as being co-written by Landy and girlfriend Alexandra Morgan. However, as subsequent court actions have seen Landy's name removed from other period songs, such as those on Wilson's , these credits may be negated. "" was a recent single, as was "", a duet with American rap group the . (The song was originally to be recorded with , but apparently struck a deal with the other group.) Make It Big was recorded for the film , and the remaining three songs - "", "" and "" – were the 'classic' recordings, ones from the group's earlier period, that had been used in recent films.

said of the album: "The theme of that album was to have been songs that have been in movies. It was basically a repackage. But then it got watered down with politics, meaning Brian's Dr. Landy forcing a song called "In My Car," which was never in a movie, and a song by [Al] , which ultimately ended up on the album, called "Island Girl," which was never in a movie either. So to me the concept was a little bit diluted there politically."

Riding on the coattails of "Kokomo", Still Cruisin' went in the US and Austria and gave the Beach Boys their best chart showing since 1976. During 's Beach Boys re-issue campaign in 2000 and 2001 however, Still Cruisin' was left behind and allowed to go out of print.

"Somewhere Near Japan" is a song written by , , , and for the . It was released on their 1989 album .

Back Story

The bulk of the song was written by and concerns his daughter honeymoon experiences. She and her new husband, both serious substance abusers, flew to , and both the money and the drugs soon ran out. This was when her father received a late night phone call from Phillips begging him send money or drugs, preferably both: when he asked where she was, the reply was "somewhere near Japan". Phillips' original version of the song, titled "Fairy Tale Girl", allegedly ran to over 25 verses. A late-1980s recording by (John Philiips, Mackenzie Phillips, , and ) under the title "Fairy Tale Girl (Somewhere Near Japan)" was belatedly released on the 2010 compilation Many Mamas, Many Papas from .

The final Beach Boys release describes a protagonist agreeing to come to the rescue of his "fairy tale girl" who is "driftin' on some Chinese junk" (a double ententre for both and ), despite the likelihood that she will "break [his] heart one more time" — concluding that "I broke her fall and I always will."

Recording

"Somewhere Near Japan" features the lead vocals of , , and . was not included in the recording of the song, as he was involved with at the time of recording and was not actively participating in many projects. He did, however, appear in the music video. The single release is a remix of the album recording. The 12-string guitars, mandolin & solo were played by Los Angeles studio musician, Craig Trippand Fall. The main recording was done at 's Red Barn Studios in Big Sur, Calif. The programming, including drums/keyboards were (as far as I know) done by Keith Wechsler, who also was the engineer on the album, and the album. The song was produced by , who co-wrote the song, helped arrange the background vocals.
