Endless Trip Book edited by Richard Morton Jack.
Published by Foxcote Books in 2011.
The fullest study of the 60s & 70s US & Canadian music scene ever published, covering pop, rock, psych, prog, folk, blues & beyond!
The book is in an excellent condition and looks brand new.
Despite the title, Endless Trip isn’t just an exhaustive survey of American psych albums issued between 1966 and ’74. It also takes in the broader realms of pop, rock, folk, blues and beyond. Like Galactic Ramble, its companion volume about the British scene, this tome combines album reviews from the time with contemporary comments from a knowledgeable, perceptive writing team. Where Endless Trip scores over its UK equivalent is in being able to draw from the bourgeoning American rock press, including Rolling Stone, Mojo Navigator, Crawdaddy, Downbeat and Circus.
Undoubtedly containing a treasure trove of unjustly neglected or forgotten records, the book doesn’t ignore the big-hitters either. It’s particularly strong in assessing major players such as the Dead or Jefferson Airplane – and doesn’t just follow received wisdom. With a thought-provoking balance of opinion, one writer considers Crosby, Stills & Nash’s debut a timeless beauty, while another reckons it fails the test of time.
Happily, Endless Trip is also strong in its revisionism. Yesterday’s bargain bin rejects (Kak, Strawberry Alarm Clock, SRC) are now cult classics, but Morton Jack’s team isn’t swayed by current opinion and trends. The Godz’ ESP recordings were – and still are – pretentious rubbish. Don’t let anybody tell you different. Online shoppers should definitely keep this splendid tome by their computers.
