The Damned are an English band formed in , England in 1976 by lead vocalist , guitarist , bassist (and later guitarist) , and drummer . They were the first band from the United Kingdom to release a single, "" (1976), release an album, (1977), and tour the United States. They have nine singles that charted on the .

The band briefly broke up after (1977), the follow-up to their debut album, was critically dismissed. They quickly reformed without Brian James, and released (1979). In the 1980s they released four studio albums, (1980), (1982), (1985), and (1986). The latter two albums did not feature Captain Sensible, who had left the band in 1984. In 1988, James and Sensible rejoined to play what was said to be the Damned's final live show. This was released the next year as the live album .

The Damned again reformed for a tour in 1991. In 1995, they released a new album, , which was Scabies's last with the band. This was followed by (2001), and their most recent album, (2008).

Despite going through numerous lineup changes, the formation of Vanian, Sensible, keyboardist , drummer and bassist had been together from 2004 until Stu West left the band in 2017 and rejoined, having been part of the band in the 1980s.

The band is well known for being one of the first bands and a major influence on the with lead singer 's vampire themed costume and dark lyrics being major influences.

The Damned influenced future bands with their fast-paced, energetic playing style and attitude. Along with the and , they helped to spearhead the punk movement in the . They are sometimes referred to as British punk's "band of firsts," having made accomplishments mentioned previously, as well as other "firsts" like the first punk band to break up and come back.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel is a double compilation album by , released by in 1987 as a retrospective collection. The same name was also given to a concurrently released video cassette and an approved band biography by Carol Clerk.

The package was marketed as a greatest hits collection, but while it includes many of the band/s acknowledged standards, several of the songs were album tracks, while others were or other rarities. This Damned retrospective, however, is the only one to unite studio recordings from all of the studio albums the band had released between 1977 and 1986.

MCA issued the album track "" as a single to support the release. The Light at the End of the Tunnel charted for a week at No. 87 in the , the band's final chart entry to date.
