ARTIST & RELEASE INFO:

The New York Dolls were an American band formed in in 1971. Along with and , they were one of the first bands of the early scenes. Although their original line-up fell apart quickly, the band's first two albums— (1973) and (1974)—became among the most popular records in rock. The line-up at this time comprised vocalist , guitarist , bassist , guitarist and pianist and drummer ; the latter two had replaced and , respectively, in 1972. On stage, they donned an androgynous wardrobe, wearing high heels, eccentric hats, and satin. Nolan described the group in 1974 as "the of today". 

According to the (1995), the New York Dolls predated the punk and movements and were "one of the most influential bands of the last 20 years". They influenced rock groups such as the , , , , and , whose frontman organized a reunion show for the New York Dolls' surviving members in 2004. After reuniting, they recorded and released three more albums— (2006), (2009) and (2011).

The New York Dolls have been inactive following a 2011 British tour with ; the band's guitarist on that tour, , confirmed in an interview they had disbanded that same year.

"Personality Crisis" is the lead track from the ' self-titled debut album. It was written by Dolls lead singer and . An early version of it appears on the 1981 collection .

originally released "Personality Crisis" in 1973 as a with to coincide with the album's release. Promo singles of "Personality Crisis" were also distributed to radio stations. Following the band's break-up, it was rereleased by as a double A-side with "Looking for a Kiss" in 1978. In 1982, a of "Personality Crisis" & "Looking For A Kiss" b/w "Subway Train" & "Bad Girl" was released by Kamera Records. The same track listing appeared on the released in 1990.

Reception[]

, who engineered , named "Personality Crisis" as his favorite song on the album. Music journalist called it an "instant glitter rock anthem", while writer and historian called it an anthemic and dynamic song. In magazine, wrote that "Personality Crisis" serves as "a jumping companion piece to classics" such as ' "Twentieth Century Fox" and "Cool, Calm & Collected" by . It is number 267 on Rolling Stone's 2004 list of the (#271 on the 2010 list). 

The song and the group were introduced to new listeners by a successful sampler album called "New Wave".

"Personality Crisis" is the closing track on David Johansen's 1982 live album, . It is the only New York Dolls original on the album. recorded "Personality Crisis" with on lead vocals in July 1990. It was first released as a write-in offer promo 7" single in the November 1990 issue of Sassy Magazine, then included on the 1993 e.p. and later added to the Deluxe Edition bonus disc of . featuring of cover the song for the soundtrack to the 1998 ode to , . included it on his 2011 album included "Personality Crisis" in a 2011 collection of covers of songs that he'd produced, entitled covers it on the various artist collection, Sin City: Dirty Rock Anthems inspired by the .
