THE APPLEJACKS - THE APPLEJACKS

increasingly rare and sought after 1964 UK pop/beat gem, on the "deep groove" DECCA label, MONO LK 4635

The dead wax matrix numbers are :

Side 1  ARL - 6464 - 1K  with stampers "1" and "K" at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock respectively

Side 2  ARL - 6465 - 1K  with stampers "1" and "U" at 10 o'clock and 4 o'clock respectively

Note also the "K T" tax code stamped at 12 o'clock on side 1 and 1 o'clock on side 2, indicative of a first pressing

e right side as for later 2nd pressings, point to this being one of the earliest 2nd pressings - almost a hybrid between a 1st and 2nd pressing in fact.

The appearance of the vinyl is very good plus (VG+). Both sides of the vinyl (nicely solid and completely flat, by the way) have retained much of their original jet black lacquered sheen with just a few very light surface scuffs visible. Under a bright light and with closer scrutiny, a number of light wispy hairlines and light scuffs come into view but which are mostly superficial and non-feelable, though there are a few small (less than 1cm) very light scratches on side 2 which are just feelable and do result in some mild clicking on tracks 4-7 on side 2. The overall condition of this vinyl is therefore a very good.

The labels are excellent. Near perfect labels with all silver text intact and clearly legible on the solid red matt background. The only blemishes are a few very fine spindle trails adjacent to the centre hole on each label. Note the circular deep groove on each label and the Decca "ear" logo, each indicative of a very early Decca pressing.

The James Upton front-laminated only outer sleeve is very good. Very nice colouration (rich, vibrant and clear) on the front side with some mild laminate lifting towards the spine edge, and further mild laminate creasing towards the top right corner. Each edge remains nice and firm with barely any scuffing, the corners remain nicely defined right angles with barely any rubbing, and the opening edges remain nicely firm with barely any fraying. The spine is in excellent shape with no nasty creasing and all writing remains perfectly legible. The reverse side suffers from some mild age discolouration towards the top, bottom, and opening edges (see photos) and a small, light stain towards the bottom edge. All text remains nicely intact and there is no unwanted writing or doodles. There is a hint of "grubbiness" about the reverse side of the sleeve, but then again you've got to bear in mind that this little gem is 55 years of age!

Finally, the quality of the audio is very good (EX). Actually side 1 audio quality borders on excellent, with lovely tone and clarity and just the merest mint of a little background interference during the beginning and a couple of the quieter moments...nothing significant really. And side 2 is similar except for the period commencing towards the end of "Baby Jane" through to almost the end of What's The Matter Little Girl" where x3 small, light scratches exist along with some light scuffing which results in some sporadic clicking : nothing nasty here with no skips or loud "pops" but there is some clicking during these tracks. At the beginning of side 2 there is some mild background "crackle" but this soon disappears and doesn't recur until the end of side 2. So, in summary, I grade the audio quality as very good plus for side 1 and very good minus for side 2. The bottom line is, is this record still a great listen? The definitive answer is "YES"!

The tracks are :

Side 1 :

1. TELL ME WHEN

2. WISHING WILL NEVER MAKE IT SO

3. OVER SUZANNE

4. HALLO JOSEPHINE

5. AS A MATTER OF FACT

6. TOO MUCH MONKEY BUSINESS

7. MEMORIES OF YOU

8. AIN'T THAT JUST LIKE ME

Side 2 :

1. KANSAS CITY

2. I WONDER

3. THREE LITTLE WORDS

4. BABY JANE

5. NO TIME

6. SEE IF SHE CARES

7. WHAT'S THE MATTER LITTLE GIRL

8. WHAT'D I SAY

Comes with original poly-lined "Handle with great care" inner sleeve with "Made in England" text, with no splits or tears but there is some mild age discolouration, some creasing towards the corners, and some fraying on the top edges. Note that I always post the record in a new plain white inner sleeve in order to protect the original.

In summary a solid very good copy of this increasingly rare and sought after 1964 UK very first pressing pop/beat gem - a worthy addition to any vinyl collection and only continuing to gain in value.

If you require any further information, including photos, then let me know and I'll do my best to oblige.

bit about myself : I have been collecting vinyl for more than 48 years and have amassed a huge collection covering a varied genre, but mostly of 1960's and 70's origin. Most of my records were originally bought by myself for my own collection, but during the past 30 years I have embellished my collection by buying records from a variety of sources : friends/acquaintances, car boot sales, auctions, and even through putting up a "vinyl wanted" notice in my wife's shop! I am now retired and take great delight in being able to spend more time scouring the country and attending boot sales and auctions in the hope of unearthing more vinyl gems...I am 63 years of age now and am still discovering bands and music of the 60's and 70's that I have never come across before. Wonderful! Richard

My ebay feedback speaks for itself so rest assured that you are buying from a trusted seller and in the very unlikely event that you are unhappy with your purchase just e-mail me and I'll sort out the problem. I offer a "no quibble" refund policy

On the subject of postage, I take great care in the packaging of all items, using a proper vinyl thick cardboard "crucifix" style mailer along with at least two thick cardboard stiffeners. I take great care in separating the record from the outer sleeve in order to help prevent sleeve damage in transit and I always insert the vinyl, outer sleeve and inner into a clear plastic sleeve, thus adding further protection.

For this item postage & packaging will be UK £3.00, Royal Mail 1st class; continental Europe £7 and Rest of the World £10, Royal Mail 1st class/Airmail.

I DO discount post & packaging costs for multiple purchases. I do NOT profit from postage.

Good luck with your bidding!

Excellent

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and /or creasing.

Very Good

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

Good

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

Bad

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler
