Beach Music Pioneers - Summertime's Calling Me - The Catalinas 1957-2019. Condition is New. Shipped with USPS Media Mail.
Almost everyone who loves the Catalinas, and have read "Summertime's Calling Me," was astounded at the rich heritage of the First Beach Music Band of the modern era. (There was *one* other 'Beach Music Band' in the 40s -- but that wasn't known until revealed in Fessa' Hook's "Forgotten Pioneers and Amazing Rise of Beach Music.")
"Summertime's Calling Me" contains dozens of photographs of the various Catalina's lineups, from the early years from 1957-60 ("it was impossible to find a drummer that stayed any length of time"), as well as the surprising, and often unknown, origins of the early Catalinas from a wide variety of bands who played throughout the Southeast and beyond. Also included is the story of the Park Center Shows in Charlotte, NC where the Catalinas reigned as kings along with Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs....establishing the Park Center as the launching pad for dozens of up and coming bands who went on to become great Beach Music bands in their own right---with still more pictures.
The layers of 'lost' Beach Music history here is mind-blowing! Fessa' Hook was lucky to have extensive conversations with the last two Original Catalinas in preparing this book. That was especially important because one of the two was a young lady (!), followed by three more! Everyone has always thought the first decade of Beach Bands was all-male!!!!! A fascinating story that reveals the evolution of one of the last original bands still performing -- with three number One songs on the Beach Music Top 40 charts in the last two years.
(Fessa' Hook, the preeminent Beach Music and Shag historian, has written 13 books on Beach Music and Shag history, receiving North Carolina's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, in 2019 for his lifetime dedication to the promotion of NC's state dance, the Shag, and its 'soundtrack', Beach Music).
