Midwestern trio SALEM's album King Night is one of the pillars of the short-lived "witch house" sub-genre/phenomenon - notable for it's chopped and screwed beats, manipulated, indecipherable vocals, and use of drum machines, synthesizers, sampling, and glitchy production in the service of an occult aesthetic. Originally released in 2010, King Night (along with SALEM's public persona) generated a good deal of controversy and cultural debate, but the music itself has withstood the test of time. The sheer number of influences on King Night sets the album apart from its peers. All manner of electronic sub-genres - house, synth pop, trance, rave, grime, and even ambient - combine with hip-hop, trip-hop, industrial, and noise to make up the album's infrastructure. And the band's ear for melody and commitment to pop songcraft, along with Heather Marlatt's ethereal, shoegaze-derived vocals, push SALEM's sound to the next level.
