MY VINTAGE RECORD GRADING SCALE

These records are 40-50 years old. Don't expect them to sound like new 180gram represses! Remember, if you are buying a first press, you are also buying a piece of music history! My grades are based on visual PLUS playing on my vintage system. You will hear some surface noise on most these used old records. I will not sell a record I would not listen to, unless the bad condition is noted.

Mint

A record that has not been opened, still in shrink. Shrink may have signs of wear or rub but be intact.

Near Mint (NM or M-)

A nearly perfect, opened record that looks never played with no obvious signs of wear. Record will play with no significant pops or ticks.

An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits or other noticeable similar defects. No cut-out holes, either. And of course, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves and the like.

Excellent (EX)

A record with very faint signs of wear. Record will play through with no significant audible defects. The wax will have very light signs of visual wear. Labels may have very minor imperfections that are not obviously noticeable. Covers will have light superficial wear.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

A VG+ record will show some signs of wear.

Record surfaces may show some signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences. No skips, maybe 1-2 ticks or pops. Slight surface noise between songs and softer passages.

The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. The center hole will not have been misshapen by repeated play.

Picture sleeves and LP inner sleeves will have some slight wear, slightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split.

Very Good (VG)

Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise will be more evident upon playing, especially in soft passages and during a song's intro and fade, but will not overpower the music. May have a skip or a few ticks or pops from a scratch. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches (deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound.

Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time, only two or three of them.

Good Plus(G+)

Playable record but with scratches and surface noise that can overpower music. Scratches and pops can cause a few skips. Buy a G+ record only if a better grade is too expensive of you need a place holder.

G+ covers can have significant wear, splitting, stains. It can still hold a record until a better one comes along.
