STEPHEN SONDHEIM BIO/INFO-
Stephen Sondheim was born in New York in 1930. He has written the music and lyrics for twelve Broadway musicals and the lyrics for West Side Story, Gypsy, and Do I Hear a Waltz?, as well as many other songs. He has composed film scores and has won an Academy Award best original song for “Sooner or Later,” which was sung by Madonna in Dick Tracy. He won the Tony Award and the Drama Critics Circle Award for best score for Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and Passion. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Sunday in the Park with George. In 1983 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1990 he was appointed the first visiting professor of contemporary theater at Oxford University and, in 1993, was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors for Lifetime Achievement. In 1992 he refused to accept the National Endowment’s Medal of Arts Award because he felt the NEA had been, in his words, “transformed into a conduit and symbol of censorship and repression rather than encouragement and support.” He accepted the award in 1997.
American
composer and lyricist for film and stage productions notably 'West
Side Story' in 1956, born 22 March 1930 in New York City, New York,
USA and died 26 November 2021 in Roxbury, Connecticut, USA.
Sondheim
has received an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards (including a Special
Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre), eight Grammy
Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a 2015
Presidential Medal of Freedom.
“COMAPANY- A MUSICAL COMEDY” INFO-
... the convention-shattering 1970 musical (revived on Broadway in 1995) that launched composer Sondheim's most fertile period--and his cult. Originally a series of one-act plays about marriage, the musical adds a linking character, Robert, who is the only one without a spouse. In visiting each of a half dozen couples who are his friends, Robert seeks to learn "what do you get" from being married. The answer is far from Hallmark, but visceral. The text includes Furth's witty, cutting dialogue and Sondheim's brilliant lyrics--especially to "Another Hundred People," "Have I Got a Girl for You" and "Being Alive." A portrait of urban angst that is nonetheless hilarious.
NOTES FROM DISCOGS ON THE VARIOUS CAST ALBUMS-
"Company"
is a musical comedy. The original production was nominated for a
record-setting fourteen Tony Awards and won six. The musical opened
on Broadway on April 26, 1970 at the Alvin Theatre, where it ran for
705 performances and seven previews. Shortly after opening night,
Dean Jones withdrew from the show, allegedly due to illness. He was
replaced by his understudy Larry Kert.
The
Broadway cast album did not include Kert, because it had already been
recorded before he assumed the role of Bobby. However, after having
Jones' original vocals mixed out of the original Broadway backing
tracks, when the cast travelled to London to reprise their roles,
Columbia Records took Kert into the studio to record new vocal
tracks. This "new" recording featuring the new vocals laid
over the original Broadway backing tracks was released as the
Original London Cast recording. In 1998, when Sony Music who had
acquired the Columbia catalogues, released a newly digitalized CD
version of the original Broadway cast recording, Kert's rendition of
"Being Alive," the show's final number, was included as a
bonus track.
Also
available are cast recordings of the 1995 Broadway and London
productions and the 2006 Broadway production.
Video
recordings are available of the 1995 London and 2006 Broadway
revivals.
