PLUS THE BONUS OF THESE LP'S FROM BOOKER T & THE MG'S - GREEN ONIONS MONO IN HEAVY VINYL LIMITED EDITIONBooker T. Jones and his "Memphis Group" are most famous for their 1962 instrumental hit "Green Onions", which is one of the most recognisable instrumental songs ever. It was a No.3 hit in the pop charts when it was released, and has been used in many TV shows and adverts, films and video game soundtracks.
They have had other hits too, most notably "Soul Limbo" and "Melting Pot", which have also both been licensed to TV shows and soundtracks.
Aside from recording their own work, the group was the house band for Stax Records, one of the most famous soul labels of the 60s. Hits that featured Booker T & The MGs include: "Soul Man" by Sam & Dave, "Try A Little Tenderness" (and many others) by Otis Redding, "Knock On Wood" by Eddie Floyd, and "Who's Making Love?" by Johnnie Taylor. They also frequently collaborated with Isaac Hayes, and guitarist Steve Cropper became one of Stax's best songwriters and producers. It is said that The Beatles were big fans of Booker T & The MGs, and wanted to collaborate with them as they found Cropper's guitar-playing inspirational

GREEN ONIONS - HEAVY VINYL ISSUE - MONO The first album recorded by Booker T. enabling him to “stretch out” and bring his own way of playing to a variety of tunes. Two of the selections have been recorded successful by other instrumentalists – Mr. Acker Bilk’s “Stranger On The Shore”, which was a giant hit by the clarinetist and “Comin’ Home Baby” attracted a great deal of attention because of jazz flutist’s Herbie Mann recording of the number.
Other tracks include: Green Onions – Rinky-Dink – cover of Ray Charles I Got A Woman – Mo’ Onions – cover of Beatles Twist and Shout – Behave Yourself – cover of Acker Bilk’s Stranger On The Shore – Lonely Avenue – cover of One Who Really Loves You - cover of Dee Clark’s I Can’t Sit Down – A Woman, A Lover, A Friend – and cover of Herbie Mann’s Comin’ Home Baby.
SOUL DRESSING - 180 GRAM MONO LIMITED EDITION
Booker T. Jones is internationally famous as one of the most exciting organists in the pop music, rhythm and blues and jazz fields, and yet few people are aware that his last name is Jones. This can be explained because he is more widely known as the first part of Booker T. & The MGs – the MGs stands for Memphis Group. That’s the city where the group met and where their records are made.
Another remarkable fact about Booker T. & The MGs is that many of the numbers in the group’s repertoire were composed by the group itself. In this album, eleven of the tunes were – as one of the songs suggests – “Home Grown”. The most interesting part of this is that they are real group efforts. Many of the tunes were worked out on the job or in the recording studio. Booker T. or guitarist Steve Cropper may get an idea – it’s tossed around among the fellows in the combo – and each makes a suggestion or two.
It’s no coincidence that so many of the song titles refer to food; for example – “Green Onions” (their biggest hit of all) – Soul Dressing – Jellybread, and Plum Nellie. The MGs love good food as much as they do good music. Tracks on SOUL DRESSING include: Soul Dressing – Tic-Tac-Toe – Big Train – Jellybread – Aw’ Mercy – Outrage – Night Owl Walk – Chinese Checkers – Home Grown – Mercy Mercy – Plum Nellie and Can’t Be Still.

180-gram vinyl
On the aptly titled Doin' Our Thing (1968), the famed Stax house band indeed play their own compositions, to be heard in the album opener "I Can Dig It," the title track and "Blue On Green."
But the boys also make a list of classic soul and r&b covers their own. They tackle famous tracks such as "Expressway To Your Heart," written by the famed producer duo Gamble & Huff and popularized by the Soul Survivors in 1967. "The Beat Goes On," originally written by Sonny Bono (who made it an evergreen with his then-wife Cher) is sprinkled with some Booker T. magic and "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by Holland, Dozier & Holland gets the ever-so-funky organ treatment.

SOUL LIMBO - This classic 1968 Stax album features a band of musicians who were set to become the ultimate soul rhythm section of all time. The highlight of the 'Booker T sound' has to be the interplay between guitar and organ, which is beautifully illustrated on this album, on tracks like Hang 'Em High and the evergreen Soul Limbo.
Soul Limbo was somewhat of a milestone for Booker T. & the MGs. Until 1968, the Stax label in Memphis where the MGs played on countless hits by Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Albert King, Wilson Pickett, and so many others, had been distributed by the mighty Atlantic label in New York. When this deal ended, there was a flurry of activity in Soulsville U.S.A. as the label rushed to get as much product as possible on the market.
So Stax was in "limbo", and the MGs saw the company through. The carribean flavored title track (later famously used as the theme for Cricket on the BBC) was among the first hits (along with Johnnie Taylor's "Who's Makin' Love") that Stax scored.
The MGs' albums at this point had been getting better and better peaking with 1967's terrific Hip Hug-Her. This has their usual mix of inspired covers and cutting edge originals.
One of their most well known and highest charting records was their epic rendition of Dominic Frontiere's "Hang 'em High" from the Clint Eastwood film. There's also the infectious "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy", a funkdified reworking of "Eleanor Rigby", and an absolutely superb Jazz piano showcase for Booker T. Jones with the standard "Willow Weep For Me".
Guitarist Steve Cropper's and especially drummer Al Jackson, Jr.'s work here once again affirms their superiority over ordinary humans. Jackson really stands out on Aretha Franklin's "(Sweet, Sweet Baby) Since You've Been Gone" and both are on fire on the smokin' original "Heads or Tails" and the Jones and William Bell written Albert King classic "Born Under a Bad Sign" which also features great B-3 organ bursts from Booker. Their versions of the Franklin and King songs makes the album worth searching out, as the other tracks already mentioned (and the great original "Over Easy", the B side to "Hang 'em High") all appear on the 1997 box set Time Is Tight.
They just don't make 'em like this anymore. This is one of the finest instrumental sets ever released and one of the most essential in the discography of Booker and his Memphis Group.
HIP HUG-HER LIMITED EDITION LP PART OF THE STAX 60TH SERIES
Booker T. & The MG's smoked the charts once again in 1967 with the fabulously slinky "Hip Hug-Her" - just like they'd never left. As house band for Memphis' Stax Records, backing Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and Wilson Pickett, the MG's had written the book on instrumental soul music, and the Hip Hug-Her album impeccably testifies to the greatness of Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and Alvin Jackson. MG's versions of the Young Rascals' "Groovin'" and Bobby Hebb's "Sunny" were so downright in-the-groove, they became big hits themselves all over again. Another lip-smackingly delicious exact reproduction from STAX 60TH SERIES, on vinyl, from the absolute vintage analog tapes!
Selections: Hip Hug-Her, Soul Sanction, Get Ready, More, Double Or Nothing, Carnaby St., Slim Jenkins’ Joint, Pigmy, Groovin’, Booker’s Notion, Sunny.
This album features duets with Lucinda Williams, Steve Winwood, B.B. King, Bettye LaVette, John Popper, Sharon Jones, Brian May and more!
As the original guitarist of Stax Records house band Booker T. and the M.G.'s and voted one of Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarist of All Time, Steve Cropper's album "Dedicated" is a tribute to his favorite band The 5 Royales.
If Yankee Stadium is "the house that Babe Ruth built," Stax Records is "the house that Booker T, and the MG's built." Integral to that potent combination is MG rhythm guitarist extraordinaire Steve Cropper. As a guitarist, A & R man, engineer, producer, songwriting partner of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others and founding member of both Booker T. and the MG's and The Mar-Keys, Cropper was literally involved in virtually every record issued by Stax from the fall of 1961 through year end 1970.
Cropper strummed a guitar for the first time at the age of 10 and mail ordered his first guitar at the age of 14 when he began playing with local musicians. His guitar heroes at the time included Chet Atkins, Chuck Berry, Tal Farlow, Jimmy Reed and Lowman Pauling of the "5 Royales".
"The first time I was exposed to The 5 Royales was through Duck Dunn, who was the bass player in my high school band. His brother worked for King Record Distributors in Memphis, and I heard the song called "Think" with these great guitar licks in it and I said, "Man, that's what I want to sound like." = Steve Cropper
Steve Cropper co-wrote "Knock On Wood" with Eddie Floyd, "In the Midnight Hour" with Wilson Pickett and "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" with Otis Redding.
Steve Cropper's career includes playing with the likes of Rod Stewart, Levon Helm, The Jeff Beck Group, Ringo Starr and John Lennon. He also played guitar on the cover of The Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale" which appears on Big Star's Third/Sister Lovers. He went on to figure prominently in the Blues Brothers Band with drummer Willie Hall.

A 3-CD, 65-song boxed set that includes all their hits from 1962-1971, plus numerous LP tracks and rarities! Their first hit Green Onions kicks the party off, followed by soulful favorites like Mo' Onions; Hip Hug-Her; Chinese Checkers; Jellybread and Groovin' . The second disc captures some great moments, like segments from McLemore Avenue , the quartet's all-instrumental, tune-for-tune answer to Abbey Road . Then on to previously-unreleased live material and rarities-a number of sides here ( Burnt Biscuits; Fannie Mae; Sunday Sermon; MG Party; Meditation ) have never been on CD before! Other oddities include a live medley of James Brown material from 1968; Albert King on vocals for a gritty Born under a Bad Sign ; a 10-minute jam on Time Is Tight ; a 1965 single Hole in the Wall released under the name "the Packers"; a version of (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay with Neil Young on vocals, and more!
Almost an accidental ensemble, Booker T. & the MGs came together for a functional reason--to play as the house band for Memphis's Stax Records. But organist Booker T. Jones and guitarist Steve Cropper found alchemy, transforming rhythm-section riffing into an art, slicing through air where listeners expected vocals and doing so with tremendous success on their first single, "Green Onions," which was later featured on the American Graffiti. This three-CD set captures the quartet's core in plentiful doses, leading off with their 1961 first salvo and cruising through numerous attempts at remaking the soulful classic. But in tinkering with the "Green Onions" formula, the band found dozens of instrumental variations, much like later, all-instrumental genre straddlers. They also found countless hours of work, backing some of Memphis soul's most revered artists and defining a backbone sound of organ and guitar layered over the increasingly vital rhythms of bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn and original drummer Al Jackson. They played expansive minor-key soul, as "Ode to Billie Joe" and many other tunes here attest, and later in the 1960s went on to churn out charting hits and great albums alike. The second CD in this set captures some great moments, especially the segments from MCLEMORE AVENUE the quartet's all-instrumental tune-for-tune riposte to ABBEY ROAD. Later in the set you get ALBERT KING on vocals for a gritty "Born Under a Bad Sign" and then BOZ SCAGGS and NEIL YOUNG fronting the quartet (with Steve Potts or Jim Keltner drumming in place of the long-ago murdered Jackson). This collection will leave you wanting more.
