BONUS CD  THE TRASHMEN TEEN TROT 1965 - On August 22, 1965, some 700 lucky teenagers at Proch's Popular Ballroom in Ellsworth, Wisconsin shook to the Bird Dance Beat of Minneapolis' mighty Trashmen. Now, it's not like this show was one of a kind. Heck, the T-men played 289 dates in 1964 alone. What makes this one so special is that it's one of only a handful ever captured on tape. The magic moments captured during this show are many: from the opening chords of "Baja," awash with a banzai pipeline worth of reverb, through the verbal playfulness of "Little Queenie"; from the successful "Trashmenification" of something as goofy as Herman's Hermits' "I'm Henry VIII, I Am" to an absolutely insane careen through "Surfin' Bird," and the show-wrapping spectacle of a falsettoed-to-the-max Tony Andreason giving Little Eva a run for the money on "Keep Your Hands Off My Baby," this limited-edition, strings 'n' skins-thrashin', in-their-prime performance by the Trashmen will plaster a smile all over your kisser. Teen Trot is the first-ever release of a live concert by the Trashmen, and features 20 songs - nine previously unissued - original stage announcements for that "you-are-there" feeling, gobs of cool photos, and more! TRACK LISTING: 1. Baja 2. Little Queenie* 3. Green Onions 4. Let's Go Trippin' 5. Keep A Knockin'* 6. Money* 7. Susie Q* 8. I'm Henry VIII, I Am* 9. Announcements 10. Lovin' Up A Storm 11. Announcements 12. Surfin' Bird 13. Drive In 14. Peppermint Man* 15. Malaguena 16. Rumble 17. Henrietta 18. Kuk* 19. Roll Over Beethoven* 20. Hi-Heel Sneakers 21. Walkin' The Dog 22. Keep Your Hands Off My Baby* 23. Closing *previously unissued

It's Sunday night, August 22, 1965 and in tiny Ellsworth, Wisconsin, the Trashmen are playing in front of some 700 people at Proch's Popular Ballroom. Meanwhile, in the larger city of Portland Oregon, The Beatles are playing in front of some 20,000 people at the Portland Memorial Coliseum. Live recordings were made of both shows which were not made available to the general public for decades. For The Trashmen, the Ellsworth gig was just another of the 200+ the band did in its efforts to make a living in music. The surf-novelty hit `Surfin' Bird' was released in 1963 and reached #3 on the US charts. Since then, success - at least in terms of hit records - had eluded them. In fact, the band would break up within two years. The Beatles...well; they had more success, didn't they?

As mentioned, recordings of both concerts exist. This CD, on the wonderful Sundazed label, gives us most, if not all, of the band's performance that (excuse the pun) hot August night. Considering the show was recorded on a reel-to-reel tape with two mikes lying on the stage (shades of Kingsize Taylor's recording of The Beatles at The Star Club, huh?), the audio quality is fantastic. Both vocal and instruments are clear, with no mixing issues to speak of. Whether this was simply good luck and skill at the time or a solid effort from the Sundazed engineers isn't known; maybe it's both. Regardless, the show is easily an 8 on a 10 scale.

The selections are archetypical for US bands during the period, including hits like Baja, Let's Go Trippin', Walkin' the Dog, and Rumble, as well as the obligatory picks from the Chuck Berry songbook. There is also some original stuff from the band (Kuk and Peppermint Man). But, there is also a trace of poignancy. Cut 8 - sandwiched between the Dale Hawkins' classic Susie-Q and some stage announcements ahead of Lovin' Up a Storm - shows the band knew what was going on in the world as they perform, replete with faux Brit accents, I'm Henry the VIII, I am.

And while this album might be considered a tipping point in rock `n' roll; the point where The British Invasion begins its blitzkrieg, it's better to savor the music and performance presented. Although other live Trashmen discs were issued years before this one, quality and content make Teen Trot the one to have.
