Track Listing:
A1 – How To Become A VirginThe Locust is a musical group from , known for their unique mix of speed and aggression, complexity, and weirdness.
Style
Originally a band with a strong tendency towards -based passages, they have more recently stripped down much of their past sound, but retained the heavy distortion, synthesizers, screamed vocals, and intense stage presence. On the band's unique sound and live presentations, singer/bassist Justin Pearson has said, "I wanted to change the way people perceive music, or maybe just destroy it in general." Their music is complex, dynamic and fast-paced, often featuring abrupt and inconsistent time-signature changes. These erratic elements are, according to guitarist Bobby Bray, "a reflection of perhaps how our brains have to function in order to be able to do anything in the Western societies we live in."
HistoryThe Locust was formed in 1994 by Justin Pearson, Bobby Bray, Dylan Scharf, Dave Warshaw, and Dave Astor. After a number of personnel changes, they arrived at the current four-piece lineup in 2001.
Their music was featured in ' film .
The group has also solicited remixes from , , , and .
EquipmentKaram plays an assortment of , including various models and a patch-panel . Bobby plays a , and Pearson plays a see-through body bass made by . Gabe Serbian plays Ludwig drums, with Sabian Cymbals.
TheatricsThe Locust have a unique stage presence: costumed in skin-tight, full body nylon suits (which the band refer to as uniforms), they have at times come across to first-time viewers as frightening. The last 5 different suits were designed and made by Ben Warwas. Unlike most bands, which normally have the drums set up behind the other members, the four members of The Locust are usually all positioned in a line at the front of the stage. The group recommends that in order to get the full impact of the music, one should see them live.
IdeologyThe Locust boycotts and refuse to play in any Clear Channel-owned venues. This boycott affected a 2005 tour with as well as another tour with . They also have a policy of only playing all-ages shows.
The band's lyrics range from stream-of-consciousness poetry to satirical portrayals of mainstream ideas of sexuality to political commentary and critiques of religion.
InfluencesThe Locust take inspiration from (, ), obscure (, ), and .
Melt-Banana is a Japanese band that is known for playing extremely fast and mixed with , and -based song structures. The band has released ten albums and toured worldwide extensively.
In 1991, while attending , started a band called Mizu and, after a short period rehearsing with another guitarist, recruited to play guitar in the band. Mizu's original drummer and bass player quit six months after Agata joined, leaving Yasuko to handle the bass and vocal duties until she found bassist Rika. They briefly performed shows around Tokyo without a drummer. Toshiaki Sudoh then joined as the new drummer in November 1992, and they changed their name to Melt-Banana.
In May 1993, Melt-Banana played a show opening for of fame, who was impressed enough to immediately offer them a deal with his label, and would later introduce them to Mark Fischer of and .
Melt-Banana have released eleven full-length albums and 23 (primarily split releases with other bands, most of which were compiled onto one disc in 2005). In 1997, they created their own recording company, (formerly Iguana Coax), and re-issued most of their early albums. Around this time, drummer Toshiaki Sudoh quit. In more recent times, the band has had different drummers helping them on tours and in making albums. They do massive U.S. and U.K. tours yearly and smaller Japanese tours (the reason for this, according to them, is that traveling in Japan is quite expensive). In 2007 Melt-Banana recorded the song "Hair-Cat (Cause the Wolf Is a Cat!)" for on 's lineup. The latest studio album, , was released on September 30, 2013.
They have worked with a diverse range of artists, including , , , , and .
