He was a zealous follower of the Rastafarian religion. And he was an unwilling political figure in the tumultuous politics of Jamaica. But to most, Bob Marley was the undisputed sovereign of reggae music, playing the primary role in the international popularization of the style. Exodus was released on Island Records in 1977, and became one of Marley's first albums to receive widespread attention in the United States. The tracks include some of his biggest international hits, such as the title track, Jamming, One Love/People Get Ready, Three Little Birds and Waiting In Vain.

Released at the time when reggae was gaining worldwide attention, Exodus is a prime example of the political and cultural nature of the art form that became a mouthpiece for both the Rastafarian religion and the cultural struggles of the Jamaican people. Subtitled Movement Of Jah People, the album carries a strong thematic religious message of the Rastas, and preaches of the glorious end to the suffering of all Jah's people.

Bob Marley & The Wailers: Easy Skanking In Boston ’78, features two historic live shows from Boston’s Music Hall on June 8, 1978. This new and unreleased performance is from the Marley family giving unprecedented access for the first time to their personal material from their private collections and their vaults.

Highlights of the performance include a lively “Jammin’” and “The Heathen,” a song Marley and the band didn’t perform during the second set. The show features them at their most comfortable, truly enjoying themselves in the spotlight, basking in the appreciation of the audience.

Marley, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, is notable not only as the man who put reggae on the global map, but, as a statesman in his native Jamaica, he famously brought together the country’s warring factions — symbolized by rival politicians Michael Manley and Edward Siega joining hands on-stage — during his legendary “One Love Peace Concert” in Kingston, which took place on April 22, 1978, less than six weeks before this Music Hall performance in Boston. 

It was two years since Marley and the band arrived from Jamaica, with the 1977 release of Exodus recorded in London just after an assassination attempt on his life, turned into not just a socio-political statement, but one which included such hits as the title track, “Waiting In Vain” and “One Love,” paving the way for their next release Kaya and a world tour in ’78. Together with his music’s theme of liberation, Marley’s own rags-to-riches story brought inspiration to subjugated people around the world, where he was revered as a larger-than-life leader.

While Rasta Revolution contains the duplicate cuts "400 Years" and "Duppy Conqueror" from African Herbsman and is from roughly the same early-'70s period, there is a distinctly mellow feel to the record. Souful and subdued bass-led roots tracks are the foundation here, as exemplified by the pulsing "Try Me" and the playful yet stinging "Rebel's Hop." Produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry, Rasta Revolution contains some tracks that rank among the best music Bob Marley & the Wailers were to produce. Most notable is the stirring "Soul Rebel," which features a beautiful blending of Marley's plaintive singing accompanied by the Wailers' tight backing harmonies. Also excellent are "Reaction," the very danceable "It's Alright," and of course, the almost psychedelic "Mr. Brown." Bob Marley and the Wailers were really on that night in London in 1975. Like many great live albums in the pantheon of rock music they were able to find their groove early on and it does not stop until the very end of the album. Bob's singing is as passionate and heartfelt as a blues singer and often times is even more so. His "sisters," the female back-up singers, only enhance the songs because their voices are so beautiful. The guitar and bass playing is, with most reggae, rythmic and melodic and it's impossible to keep from nodding your head or tapping your feet to the beat. The guitar player pulls off some really great solos that once again only enhances the feeling of the song. The organ is rythmic and improves the already incredibly tight sound of the rythm section. It was at this gig that the legendary live recording of "No Woman No Cry" took place. Perhaps even more impressive is "Get up, stand up" which makes you want to start your own revolution against crooked politicians and everything else that is wrong with this world. "Stand up for your right"... that's damn right, Bob. My favourite tracks have to be "Trenchtown Rock," a perfect opening track, "Lively up yourself," "Get up, stand up,". The bass playing on that song just makes me wanna cry from joy it is so good. Even though it goes without saying, buy this album as soon as possible. One Love.

NATTY DREAD captures Bob Marley's decisive transition from Wailers band member to his singing and writing now front and center, and the revamped band securely reined in to his defiant, Rastafarian worldview. This 1974 release mirrors the lineup's more sinewy sound, carved by Al Anderson's spidery guitar fills, Touter's telegraphic keyboard, the I-Threes' female vocal choruses and vamping horns--a potent brew that bubbles under his then most openly political songs. A position paper on the daunting ghetto realities of Jamaica's Trenchtown, the album reels off a series of enduring Marley classics and kicks off with the giddy, sexy reggae anthem, "Lively Up Yourself," with its hilarious but mysterious spoken fadeout ("What you got in dat bag, dere?").

It continues with the uplifting pep talk in "No Woman No Cry," the grim dispatches of "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)" and "Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Roadblock)," as well as the exhortations of the title song and "Revolution." Marley's own dreadlocks were still just growing in then, but this is nonetheless fully matured, riveting reggae at its most focused, righteous, and rhythmically irresistible.
