A–Brother In The Wind Bass – Drums – Guitar, Vocals – Music By – , B–Gwodhunqa Bass [Six String], Effects – Drums, Vocals – *Music By – , *High On Fire was founded in 1998 by former guitarist , drummer , and bassist George Rice (from Dear Deceased, who originally auditioned to be the band's vocalist). The band's first full-length album was released on 12th Records, and released later on . (The album would later be re-released by , with two bonus tracks, as Man's Ruin Records had become defunct.)
In 2001, High On Fire signed a record deal with and recorded the album . The album was released on May 28, 2002. After the tours promoting Surrounded by Thieves, bassist George Rice left the band and was replaced by ex-/ bassist .
The band's next album, 2005's , was largely written by Pike and Kensel before the recording of the album took place. The album was produced by , and was released on February 1, 2005. A music video was produced for the song . While touring with and to promote Blessed Black Wings, Joe Preston left the band for undisclosed reasons, and was temporarily replaced by bassist Jeff Matz. Matz finished the tour with High On Fire and became a full-time member during the recording of . Death Is This Communion was released on September 18, 2007 (September 10, in Europe.)
After Death is This Communion was released, High On Fire played a small string of Northwest shows to promote it. The band did a headline tour of North America in September and October 2007, with support from the Japanese band , along with and Coliseum. High On Fire also played on 2008's, which was followed by a North American tour with the bands , , and .
On December 17, 2008, High On Fire signed a recording deal with . On August 1, 2009, it was announced that a new album would be recorded with producer . Later that month, following the news of the new album, High On Fire announced a tour with , , and . The tour spanned from October 2 to November 21.
In August 2009, the band went into post-production of the follow-up to Death Is This Communion at The Pass Studios in . The album artwork for the new album was released on January 7, 2010. On January 15, following the release of the album artwork, the song was posted on the band's page, and a video for the song was released on March 16, 2010. was formally released on February 23, 2010.
In March 2010, the band announced a headlining U.S. tour to promote the album; supporting bands for the tour include , , and .On April 6, 2010, the band announced they would be opening for for eight European shows.
In 2010, the band was confirmed as being part of the soundtrack for ' 2010 remake of . On April 3, 2012, High On Fire released their sixth studio album, .
High On Fire was scheduled to play the 2012 Mayhem Festival but dropped off the tour due to Matt Pike's health. Matt Pike returned to the band and they once again began touring in November 2012.
As of January 2014, the band is in the process of writing new material for an upcoming release.
Ruins is a Japanese minimalist prog duo of and . The group, formed in 1985, was supposedly intended to be a ; the guitarist, however, never showed up to the band's first rehearsal, so the group remained a duo. The drummer is and the group has featured four different bass players over its history.
The French progressive rock band is the group's most important influence, to such an extent that Ruins' original lyrics are written and sung in an invented language which, at first glance, resembles , the language invented by of Magma. Ruins' material (which Yoshida, who composes the majority of their pieces, writes out in form) is generally of extreme complexity and thus is often described as inaccessible - potential listeners may be bewildered by the band's unrestrained yet disciplined approach, or simply astounded by the visceral energy of the pair.
In addition to the "prog rock" label, the group's music has also been described as "" and "". That said, Ruins' style has consistently evolved since the band's beginnings; this is often tied in with the bassist Tatsuya was collaborating with at the time.
Ruins have collaborated with several other musicians, including prominent figure , auteur guitarist/multi-instrumentalist and alumnus .
Sasaki Hisashi left the band in 2004, and since then Yoshida has been touring solo under the name Ruins-alone(Ruins Alone). He has also performed as Sax Ruins with alto saxophonist . He was chosen by to perform at the festival Groening curated in May 2010 in Minehead, England.
