Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention Freak Out! 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION 2 LP SET

180 Gram Vinyl Double LP! Re-mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering! Pressed at Pallas in Germany!
Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 246/500!

Freak Out! is the debut album by American band The Mothers of Invention, released June 27, 1966 on Verve Records. Often cited as one of rock music's first concept albums, the album is a satirical expression of frontman Frank Zappa's perception of American pop culture. It was also one of the earliest double albums in rock music (although Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde preceded it by a week), and the first 2-record debut.

Mothers Of Invention changed from an R&B covers band to performing Zappa's original material when he joined the group. Freak Out! contains a range of musical styles from R&B, doo wop, and blues-influenced rock to orchestral arrangements and avant-garde sounds.

In 1999, the album was honored with the Grammy Hall of Fame Award, and in 2003, Rolling Stone ranked it among the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

"A master guitarist and provocateur, Frank Zappa made more than 60 albums, but the first was perhaps the most groundbreaking. The double disc declared the arrival of a visionary weirdo who dabbled in doo-wop, pop-song parody, protest tunes, art rock and avant-garde classical." - rollingstone

Back home where it belongs, the music of Frank Zappa is back in the hands of the Zappa Family Trust. To celebrate, the estate signed a global license and distribution deal with Universal Music Enterprises to release 60 of the iconic composer's recordings.

"The artist and composer, Frank Zappa, is one of the most important and influential artists in music history with his prolific body of work, including his breakthrough rock 'n roll concept albums... We intend to honor him and bring high quality releases for... for his new and longtime fans," said Bruce Resnikoff, President/CEO, Universal Music Enterprises (UME).

The UME deal includes the entire Zappa Catalog as it appeared on Frank Zappa's own independent label, Barking Pumpkin Records. Many of the original analog masters have been re-mastered for this occasion.

Zappa was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.

Finer Moments is the recording, intended for vinyl, discovered in the Vault exactly as Frank Zappa left it in 1973. You could say it's a prequel to the series "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" which was launched 15 years later. Finer Moments is probably about getting very close to the edge of perfection in terms of performance - hitting the correct notes, correctly. It's also about one of a kind performances and the events that occur simultaneously onstage - imagine all that in the same dimension.

Unavailble on vinyl for more than three decades!

Chunga's Revenge was one of three albums that the prolific composer Frank Zappa released in 1970, following Burnt Weeny Sandwich and Weasels Ripped My Flesh. The album marks the debut of Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan (among several other musicians) with the Mothers, and while their schtick has not reached the graphic proportions it later would, the thematic obsessions of the "200 Motels" (Zappa's acclaimed film and soundtrack released the following year) period are foreshadowed on tracks like "Road Ladies" and "Would You Go All the Way?"

"Other vocal numbers include the hard-rocking 'Tell Me You Love Me,' the musicians' union satire 'Rudy Wants to Buy Yez a Drink,' and the doo wop-influenced 'Sharleena.' Meanwhile, Frank Zappa's strong instrumental music incorporates Eastern European influences ('Transylvania Boogie'), cocktail jazz ('Twenty Small Cigars'), and the percussion-only 'The Clap.' Zappa's guitar tone is wonderfully biting and nasty throughout; George Duke provides another musical highlight by scat-singing a 'drum solo.'" — AllMusic

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention ABSOLUTELY FREE DOUBLE 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION LP SET

 180-gram gatefold double LP

Bonus disc with 20 minutes of vault material, D-side etching

Mastered from the original analog tape by Bernie Grundman

The Zappa Family Trust marks the 50th Anniversary of Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention's 1967 album Absolutely Free with an expanded vinyl-exclusive edition. This double 180 gram LP version includes the original record mastered by Bernie Grundman and cut directly from the original analog master tapes, plus a laser-etched additional disc including 20 minutes of bonus material from the vault.

The package features FZ's original layout and a reproduction of the rare, highly sought-after "libretto," an 18-page booklet with a foreword by FZ and lyrics to all the compositions, that was offered only by mail order when originally released.

Released 50 years ago on May 26, 1967 on Verve Records, Absolutely Free was the Mothers of Invention's follow-up to their landmark debut album, Freak Out! Brash, challenging and exhilarating, the record was revolutionary as it pushed the limits of what an album could be. A pop culture pastiche, the album leaps through genres — from psychedelic pop and progressive rock to free-form jazz and avant-garde noise to doo-wop and garage rock, often in the same composition as on album highlight "Brown Shoes Don't Make It," and is filled with Zappa's trademark biting political and social satire.

Hailed by AllMusic as a "fabulously inventive record" that is "by turns hilarious, inscrutable, and virtuosically complex," the record is divided into two "oratorios" or song suites - "Absolutely Free" and "The M.O.I. American Pageant" — and is rife with complex instrumentation, experimentation and unconventional editing.

Produced by Tom Wilson (Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, Sun Ra), who first worked with the band on Freak Out! the year prior, Absolutely Free featured a cadre of musicians working with Zappa and vocalist Ray Collins that included Jim Fielder on guitar, Roy Estrada on bass, Don Preston on keyboards, Bunk Gardner on woodwinds, and drummers Jim Black and Billy Mundi. The album was recorded the week before Thanksgiving, November 1966 in Los Angeles at the Sunset-Highland Studios of T.T.G. Inc., in a series of four sessions.

It was edited and re-mixed in New York City at the MGM Studios in five sessions the following week. In Clash's appreciation of the record, they exclaimed: "Amidst this high-brow inspiration and aggressive musical arrangement we have beautiful passages of melody, laugh-out-loud lyrics about vegetables and lacerating cynicism. Nonconformist, comedic and maverick, Absolutely Free establishes Zappa as a fantastical musical mutineer and pioneering bandleader."

Frank Zappa Zappa Original Motion Picture Soundtrack 180g 5LP Deluxe Box Set

Deluxe 180g Vinyl 5LP Box Set!

Includes 12 Unreleased Tracks, Plus More Rarities!

TAS Rated 4/5 Music, 3.5/5 Sonics in the May/June 2021 Issue of The Absolute Sound!

Forget Black Friday, Franksgiving is the real event as November 27 ushers in the long-awaited release of Alex Winter's highly acclaimed documentary, "Zappa," about the prolific genius composer, free speech activist, cultural ambassador to Czechoslovakia and legendary musician, Frank Zappa, as well as the surprise digital release of the corresponding Zappa Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. A perfect complement to the film, the soundtrack features 68 tracks.

Today also sees the launch of pre-orders for several physical releases of the soundtrack including in a deluxe 5LP box set planned for May 7, 2021, which will be available on 180-gram black vinyl The deluxe edition showcases Zappa's unique sonic brilliance and nearly every song heard in the film, including 12 previously unreleased recordings from The Vault, which include performances from the Whisky A Go-Go in 1968, the Fillmore West in '70 and Zappa's famed performance of "Dancin' Fool" on "Saturday Night Live" in '78.

The soundtrack spans Zappa's expansive catalog with 25 additional songs from across his peerless and influential career, from his seminal 1966 debut double album with the Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, to the final release of his lifetime, 1993's The Yellow Shark, a live orchestral album performed by the Ensemble Modern in Europe in 1992.

The soundtrack features songs from Zappa's record labels Straight and Bizarre Records such as "No Longer Umpire" from Alice Cooper's debut album, Pretties For You, originally released on Straight in 1969; "The Captain's Fat Theresa Shoes" by GTO's, from the all-girl group's one and only album, Permanent Damage, produced by Zappa. It also includes two classical compositions by Zappa's lifetime inspirations Edgard Varese and Igor Stravinsky as well as several interview clips. The soundtrack is rounded out with 26 original score cues newly composed by John Frizzell for the documentary.

A 2LP edition on 180-gram clear vinyl will also be available, collecting together eight of the unreleased recordings from the Zappa archive, the SNL performance and 13 recordings from Zappa's extensive recording career.

With unfettered access to the Zappa Trust and all archival footage, "Zappa" explores the private life behind the mammoth musical career that never shied away from the political turbulence of its time. Winter's assembly features appearances by Zappa's widow Gail Zappa and several of his musical collaborators including Mike Keneally, Ian Underwood, Steve Vai, Pamela Des Barres, Bunk Gardner, David Harrington, Scott Thunes, Ruth Underwood, Ray White and others. Announced on Kickstarter in 2016, the film became the highest-funded documentary in the crowdfunding site's history.

Taken together "Zappa" and the companion soundtrack offer a riveting, revealing and emotional portrait of Frank Zappa, a trailblazer, iconoclast, virtuosic musician and fearless artist who forever changed music and culture with his unconventional and uncompromising vision. From his early psychedelic rock beginnings to his avant-garde experimentation, jazz-rock explorations, symphonic suites and satirical send-ups to his conceptual, compositional and technological innovations, Zappa shattered the norms every step of the way and his influence and ethos continues to reverberate as strongly today as ever.

A treasure trove for Zappa completists.
