Mandel's debut remains his best early work, introducing an accomplished blues-rock guitarist capable of producing smooth, fluid lines and a variety of tasteful distortion and buzzing via an assortment of tone pedals and customized amplifiers. He augmented his flash with an adventurous appetite for orchestrated, quasi-classical strings (especially in the eerie symphonic title cut), jazz-blues-rock fusion in the mold of The Electric Flag (as on "Before Six"), and even a bit of country in the presence of top steel guitarist Pete Drake. Available in its entirety on the reissue compilation The Mercury Years.

We proudly present here what we strongly believe is one of the finest electric/psychedelic blues guitar albums ever recorded: the ground-breaking debut work by the legendary Harvey Mandel.

 

The list of session musicians reads like who’s-who of the rock world circa 1968: Kenny Buttrey and Pete Drake (of Bob Dylan's studio band circa "John Wesley Harding"), Armando Perazza (of Santana), Steve Miller (yes, of Steve Miller Band), Graham Bond (just fresh from jamming with Jimi Hendrix),  Charles Musselwhite, and tons of other good folks. The album is engineered and mastered by Eddie Kramer, Hendrix' personal engineer, which explains the intense, thick, fuzzy, driven guitar sound.

 

And, on the closing note: the wonderful cover artwork is one of the finest examples of the psychedelic cover art we have ever encountered.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

 

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·       COVER

 

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

 

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 3 (back side)

 

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

 

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)

 

-         Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on the top seam

 

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

 

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping
