Chris Kenner (1929-1976) almost topped the Hot 100 with I Like It Like That in 1961.  Ably assisted by King of the Keys Allan Toussaint, Chris recorded a superb NOLA-style R&B chant and it clicked.

Chris' Land Of 1000 Dances roared out of Nawlins during dance-crazed 1963.  Although it only reached #77 on the pop chart, it inspired East L.A. Latino rockers Thee Midniters to wax a hit cover & Wilson Pickett reached #6 on the Hot 100 with his 1966 version.
