Rosenstock and several other contributors were previously members of . As that band was breaking up, Rosenstock recorded the first BtMI! song, "Sweet Home Cananada," using his 's built-in microphone. "I wrote that song and put it out to see if anybody wanted it. That was how it started, people showed interest and I like recording stuff."
The band is known for their , embodied in actions such as distributing six albums worth of their own material for free on their website, and offering free stencils and paint for fans to create their own T-shirts. They also made it a point to play all-ages shows with ticket prices of $10 or less, and offered fans a chance to perform on stage if they learned a song and brought an instrument to the show. This sparked comparisons such as "the for the internet age of punk." Over time, the band's lineup shifted from "pretty much a free-for-all" to a fairly steady five-member lineup.
In 2012, the band announced an indefinite hiatus, stating that their summer US tour would likely be their last because "the 9 - 10 months of our lives when we are not playing music are not fantastic." They added, "We are beautiful complicated fucking snowflakes that blow wherever the wind takes us and you better fucking respect that shit, maaaan." Following an international farewell tour in 2013, the band played their final show in Brooklyn on January 19th, 2014.

Laura Stevenson (born April 25, 1984) is an based in , and formerly a for the .
Stevenson was raised in . Her grandfather, , was a successful and whose works included "" and "". His wife, was a singer for the . After leaving home for college, Stevenson began both playing and writing .
Growing up in , Stevenson befriended members of . After they disbanded in 2005, she was appointed keyboard player for the lead singer 's new project, . At this point, she had written a number of songs and was performing solo. While recording and touring with Bomb The Music Industry!, she began to piece together her own band, which was named Laura Stevenson & the Cans.
Initially, Stevenson's band consisted primarily of members of Bomb The Music Industry!. In summer 2007, Stevenson recruited of the band to play bass guitar for The Cans. was added on trumpet later that fall, and a year later Stevenson began working on her first studio recording.
released "A Record" on April 13, 2010, on LP and CD. The group spent more than half of that year on tour in The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Western Europe in various line-ups: sometimes as small as just Stevenson and Campbell on acoustic guitars, and other times fully electric with a three-piece horn section. The group toured with Bomb The Music Industry!, , Cults, and Cheap Girls.
The band officially signed to the independent label in November 2010, and their second album, , was released on April 26, 2011.
Stevenson's third full length album, Wheel, was released on April 23, 2013, on . had previously premiered the first single from the album, "Runner". Stevenson toured the U.S. in April and May in support of the album along with another New York band, Field Mouse.
