Why this phenomenal psych/prog/70’s rock album was only available on MFSL compact disc, and then just briefly in 1988/89 before it was completely and inexplicably deleted from both A&M and MFSL’s catalog is beyond me. Still - here it is, in all its ORIGINAL, VINYL glory: The album that pretty much defined - for better or worse - the attempts to mix classical music and rock. In my modest view, this was a much more successful and noble effort than those of ELP, Yes, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull etc. Namely, Procol Harum did not just borrow entire movements and works of classical authors (well, alright, forget about "Whiter Shade of Pale" for a moment), but tried to incorporate classical music’s aesthetics and structure into a viable rock context instead. The result is this great album which, with the possible exception of the "Grand Hotel" is the best-selling PROCOL HARUM album ever.

***

This whole album was an afterthought -- Procol Harum had been invited to play a concert with and in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in August of 1971, at the tail-end of their last tour with in the lineup. Amid all of the preparation -- including the writing of new orchestral arrangements by and with a new lead guitarist, , just joining the lineup -- decided that it might be a good idea to preserve a professionally made tape of the show and suggested that A&M Records, to which they were signed, might want to record the performance; the label agreed with just a week to go until the concert. Even "Conquistador," the song on which the resulting album's commercial success was built, was added at the last minute, with no time for the orchestra to rehearse the arrangement that wrote on the flight from England. They did it cold, opening the concert, and the eventual album featured a performance -- highlighted by the orchestra's brass in a Spanish mode, running scales on the strings, and 's powerful drumming -- helped loft the single to number 16 in America. The group's second-biggest hit record (after "A Whiter Shade of Pale"), in turn, helped lift the album into the American Top Five. Ironically, the success of the LP also left Procol Harum's image slightly askew, with the presence of the orchestra and choir and the selection of songs, from the most ambitious part of the band's repertory, all combining to present the group as more of a progressive rock act than they actually were. "Conquistador" was the most accessible song on the album, and nothing else here matches it for sheer, bracing excitement, but the rest -- especially "Whaling Stories" and "A Salty Dog" and the multi-part "In Held 'Twas I" -- were all opened up by the vast canvas provided by the orchestra, and the group didn't wimp out in their own performance; , , , and company all played hard and heavy where the songs required it.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
