I think one great line of vinyl collecting is when initial issues of LP covers are changed due to complaints from record company executives, from censors, or from the buying public.

Remember the Beatles “Butcher Cover” and the Mamas & Papas “Toilet” Cover? Or how about the Dave Clark Five “No-Instruments” Cover or Blind Faith’s “Topless Girl” Cover? And don’t forget Three Dog Night’s “Nude” Cover and their “Birthing” Cover and Roxy Music’s “Naked Ladies” cover. Replacement covers were issued for all of these original covers.

There are 2 LPs in this auction:

LP#1:

·       “STREET SURVIVORS” LP by Lynyrd Skynyrd

·       This is MCA Records (MCA 3029).

·       This LP was released in 1977.

·       This LP became known as the Lynyrd Skynyrd “Flames Cover”.

·       This cover was found to be objectionable because, in an ironic twist of fate, only 3 days after this LP was released, several band members, including lead vocalist and primary song writer Ronnie Van Zant, died in a plane crash. As a result, the flames on the cover seemed insensitive to everyone, fans, friends and family, so MCA used the image of the band on the rear of the cover (without flames)  to replace the “flames” image and the background was changed to black without flames.

·       The ORIGINAL “FLAMES COVER” is GRADED VERY STRONG VG to VG+ CONDITION with some light to moderate overall wear on both front and rear slicks and some light wear on the corners and base of the spine. This is a gatefold cover. The rear of the cover has a couple of vertical creases near the opening a couple of light indentations.

·       This LP also has:

1)   White sheet that has an order form and advertises the Lynyrd Skynyrd t-shirt, pendent with chain, and book on one side and  a survey about Lynyrd Skynyrd LPs on the other side.

2)   Orange sheet that has the LP tracks and credits on one side and the Lynyrd Skynyrd concert tour schedule from October, 1977 to February, 1978 on the other side. (This sheet has one small corner crease.)

·       The VINYL for the “Flames Cover” is in VG+ CONDITION with some very light surface hairlines/scuffs.

But in this auction, in addition to the “Flames Cover”, the high bidder also receives the black replacement cover!!!

LP#2:

·       “STREET SURVIVORS” LP by Lynyrd Skynyrd

·       This LP has the BLACK REPLACEMENT COVER.

·        The COVER is in VG+ CONDITION with light overall wear and some very light edge and corner wear. This LP was also released with a gatefold cover. The rear cover of this LP states “This album has been previously released by MCA Records, Inc. under different jacket artwork.” (meaning, the “Flames Cover”.)

·       There is one insert that has an order form and advertises the Lynyrd Skynyrd t-shirt, pendent with chain, and book on one side and  the LP tracks and credits on the other side.

·       The VINYL for this cover is in NEAR MINT CONDTION.

THIS IS A GREAT “BEFORE & AFTER SET” of Lynyrd Skynyrd LPs! So, win this auction and you win 2 Skynyrd LPs and their covers! These 2 LPs go hand-in-hand and would look great framed in someone’s “vinyl room”.

FYI: I use Goldmine Grading Standards (G for Good, VG for Very Good, VG+ for Very Good Plus, NM for Near Mint, M for Mint) to VISUALLY grade these LPs, so please know the descriptions of these grades before bidding.
