Generally regarded as Peter Gabriel's finest record, his third eponymous album finds him coming into his own, crafting an album that's artier, stronger, more song-oriented than before. Consider its ominous opener, the controlled menace of "Intruder." He's never found such a scary sound, yet it's a sexy scare, one that is undeniably alluring, and he keeps this going throughout the record. For an album so popular, it's remarkably bleak, chilly, and dark -- even radio favorites like "I Don't Remember" and "Games Without Frontiers" are hardly cheerful, spiked with paranoia and suspicion, insulated in introspection. For the first time, Gabriel has found the sound to match his themes, plus the songs to articulate his themes. Each aspect of the album works, feeding off each other, creating a romantically gloomy, appealingly arty masterpiece. It's the kind of record where you remember the details in the production as much as the hooks or the songs, which isn't to say that it's all surface -- it's just that the surface means as much as the songs, since it articulates the emotions as well as Gabriel's cubist lyrics and impassioned voice. He wound up having albums that sold more, or generated bigger hits, but this third Peter Gabriel album remains his masterpiece.

A Note on Classic Records: Acclaimed reissue label specializing in audiophile LP reissues of classic albums; employed its own custom-built tube-based mastering equipment on all of its releases; masters its releases from original master tapes (or the best sources available). Earliest releases were a box set of RCA Living Stereo classical titles and Verve jazz titles (subsequently sold individually). Classic used 180 gram vinyl until 2001. That year they switched to 180 gram "SV" (Super Vinyl) and added a sticker specifying the type of vinyl to all their LPs. They introduced 200 gram "Quiex SV-P" in July 2002. That was followed by "SV-P II" and, in 2008, "Clarity Vinyl." In the 2000s, they also introduced lower priced versions of many of their LPs, pressed from the same masters but on regular 150, 140, or 120 gram vinyl. Represses were always done on the latest vinyl formulation and can be dated by the sticker. Classic also produced a line of gold CDs in the 1990s and then 24/96 HDAD digital disks. Mastering was typically done at Bernie Grundman Mastering by Grundman himself or Chris Bellman. Classic's assets were purchased by Acoustic Sounds in 2010

·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records .

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record is believed to come in its original, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album.

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

COVER IS STONE MINT, STILL SEALED AND NOTHING SHORT OF ABSOLUTE PERFECTION, WITHOUT EVEN A HINT OF A FLAW OR DEFECT; A KIND OF BEAUTY YOU ONLY GET TO SEE ONCE IN A LIFETIME

NO FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER. NONE WHATSOEVER!
