Who Are You was initially intended to be Pete Townsend's answer to the punk movement sweeping through Britain's underground and threatening to label bands like The Who as dinosaurs past their prime. However, the album took on a completely different meaning only one month after it was released; today it's viewed as an elegy to the too-soon-departed Keith Moon.

 

The album has a stiff sonic quality to it, as it was constructed almost entirely via overdubs. Rarely were two or more members of the group in the studio together actually working on the album. Despite the flaws in execution, Townsend doesn't fail to write an engaging album that gets its message across. The title track is great classic Who, and "New Song" and "Sister Disco" are two standout tracks. This is also John Entwistle's strongest presence on a Who album, placing three of his compositions here ("Had Enough", "905" and "Trick of the Light").

 

The band is still playing like a powerful, top-notch unit in spite of the assembly-line approach. Keith Moon's drumming, probably as a reflection of his declining health, is more subdued than on prior albums but he still delivers a solid-as-expected performance.

 

So this was the end of The Who's classic lineup. After 13 years, 8 albums, and a live act that was as exciting and unpredictable as any in music, the band continually broke new ground every time they picked up their instruments, and left a legacy few could approach. Too bad we'll never get to hear what else these guys could've done together. RIP Keith.

(b)          The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(c)           The record comes in a PVC inner sleeve (visible through the cutout corner and die-cut window)

 

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (THE SHRINK HAS SEPARATED ALONG ROUGHLY 70%  OF THE OPENING SIDE,  70% ON THE OPENING SIDE. 40% OF THE TOP LENGTH AND 20% OF THE BOTTOM LENGTH, BUT THE ALBUM IS STILL VISIBLY SEALED); (A PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP - ABOUT 20% -  IS MISSING)

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)

 

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

 

-        Cover has some light ring wear in one small area not covered by the shrink wrap (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2. (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)
