King Crimson opened 1970 scarcely in existence as a band, having lost two key members (Ian McDonald and Michael Giles), with a third (Greg Lake) about to leave. Their second album -- largely composed of Robert Fripp's songwriting and material salvaged from their stage repertory ("Pictures of a City" and "The Devil's Triangle") -- is actually better produced and better sounding than their first. Surprisingly, Fripp's guitar is not the dominant instrument here: The Mellotron, taken over by Fripp after McDonald's departure -- and played even better than before -- still remains the band's signature. The record doesn't tread enough new ground to precisely rival In the Court of the Crimson King. Fripp, however, has made an impressive show of transmuting material that worked on stage ("Mars" aka "The Devil's Triangle") into viable studio creations, and "Cadence and Cascade" may be the prettiest song the group ever cut. "The Devil's Triangle," which is essentially an unauthorized adaptation of "Mars, Bringer of War" from Gustav Holst's The Planets, was later used in an eerie Bermuda Triangle documentary of the same name. [In March of 2000, Caroline and Virgin released a 24-bit digitally remastered job that puts the two Mellotrons, Michael Giles' drums, Peter Giles' bass, and even Fripp's acoustic guitar and Keith Tippett's acoustic piano practically in the lap of the listener.]
Vinyl: EX. I'm very happy to be able to present this KING CRIMSON gem in this wonderful condition. The audio is simply sublime played on my Project Debut deck with Ortofon cartridge and through my Rotel amp and B&W speakers. This vinyl sounds out of this world, a majestic album that showed that really went largely under the radar. Why ...?
Unbelievably it has just two wispy hairlines and the audio is simply stunning. Just a few paper retraction traces only visible under a very strong light! Even a new vinyl would have these. The audio has beautiful separation and there is hardly ever any background noise. This has barely been played as is evidenced by the lack of spindle traces. I played this through in full and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was even tempted to keep this as it will be very hard to find this again, it is indeed mega rare now in this kind of condition. Needless to say NO jumps, clicks or ticks.
Gatefold Sleeve: EX. Fantastic looked after matt textured gatefold sleeve with beautiful rich colours and without any creasing. It sits superbly flat and has a sharp crisp opening. Not handled much at all as evidenced by the pleasant "creak" of the cardboard whilst opening the gatefold. This copy belongs in the top 10% of copies as the storage wear is just very minimal and just confined to the light rubbing over the bottom edge. The spine has the lightest of wear but is 95% legible. There are no marks or creases. One tiny nick on the opening (see pic). A very respectable original sleeve. The winner will be very pleased indeed!! No marks, no seam splits or tears. The inside gatefold is totally unmarked without any writing. This is an upgrade for most Island/King Crimson or prog collectors.
Though there are rarely ever any problems with my items, I always try my very best to describe everything exactly! PLEASE REMEMBER to contact me FIRST, if you have any problems at all, before you leave feedback and star ratings, so I get a chance to turn any negative experience into a positive one! I can always happily sort anything out for you, if you let me know you have a problem! This way no one has to leave Negative/Neutral feedback - and we both walk away happy! Similarly with the amount of stars, anything less than a full 5 * rating is effectively detrimental to a seller's rating as lower ratings will incur higher Final Value Fees and lower priority in the bidlists eventually making it unattractive to list items on Ebay at all. I know of at least one major previous Ebay seller who has decided not to list via Ebay again. Please do NOT bid if you cannot give me at least 1 chance to sort everything out to your FULL satisfaction in the unlikely event of a problem. Thanks again!!
This an excellent investment opportunity!!! Any questions please ask me and I will try to answer soon.
