A beautifully recorded session of top quality blues performed by masters of their art. On paper it may look like a slightly odd coupling of KC shouter with a Chicago blues band. The results confirm that Jimmy Witherspoon is a blues singer full of passion and throughout this session all the musicians compliment each other admirably. A beautiful slab of music.

Witherspoon's style of blues – that of the "blues shouter" – became unfashionable in the mid-1950s, but he returned to popularity with his 1959 album, Jimmy Witherspoon at the Monterey Jazz Festival, which featured Roy Eldridge, Woody Herman, Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Earl Hines and Mel Lewis, among others. He later recorded with Gerry Mulligan, Leroy Vinnegar, Richard "Groove" Holmes and T-Bone Walker.

"It is apparent that Witherspoon is refining his tight blues chops with the band. From the classic Dollar guitar intro on Willie Nelson's "Night Life", this is a band effort. Witherspoon's confident, masculine vocals are timeless. On "Help Me', there are hooks (somewhat like "Green Onions" by Booker T. and the M.G's) that sell the song. Witherspoon's voice is utilized like an instrument." RG
