Fleetwood Mac created Rumours the old-fashioned way: they blocked out entire studios for long, expensive recording sessions, never arrived until late afternoon, did an astronomical amount of drugs, and then, sufficiently whacked by 1:00am or so, started recording. Add one newly busted-up intraband marriage, one on-again-off-again intraband affair, a different affair between a band member’s wife and his best friend, did I mention cocaine?, several planet-size egos, and—bam!—rock and roll magic. Beyond the obvious talent in the room, the turmoil helped give the songs depth and meaning. As Stevie Nicks once said, Fleetwood Mac “created the best music when in the worst shape.” Indeed.
