This album is an original 1984 pressing of Private Dancer by Tina Turner. LP, cover, and sleeve are all in remarkable shape. Playback is strong start to finish.

 

Private Dancer could’ve been a disaster. With five producers, six recording studios, and nine songs representing at least four different genres—not to mention a record label that had to be dragged kicking and screaming into giving Turner all of two weeks to record the album—it should’ve been a disaster. Instead, Tina Turner created a modern masterpiece and engineered one of the greatest comebacks in all of music. The critics loved it. Her fans loved it. Old-school radio and new-school MTV loved it. The Grammys loved it. Her peers loved it. And, as evidenced by the 177-date Private Dancer tour, the world loved it.

 

Take it from this L.A.-born-and-bred first-generation punk: Private Dancer is a great album. Every song works on its own as well as part of a larger story. And whether it’s a downtempo ballad, stadium-ready rock anthem, or stunning cover of a Bowie classic, constant throughout is Turner’s truly iconic voice and her supreme talent at using it to both ground the music and allow it to soar.
