Immediately you know it's the genuine article, and you are knee-deep in the 1960's UK scene/culture.. yet.. there is a subtle undercurrent of North American blues/R'n'B to some of these songs that kind of grated on the first couple of listens.. and these weird nasal vocals do take some time to get used to.. but once it clicks.. The undulating magic carpet ride of "Flying Anchors", the thunderous "Supernatural Fairy Tales".. The urgent, distressed sounding opener "I Think I'm Going Weird".. And a retina-burning cover artwork courtesy of Hapshash & The Coloured Coat. Not a perfect album for my money, but still damn fine. And its best moments definitely outweigh the lesser stuff. It must have been very hard to compete with "Sgt. Pepper's", "Piper", Doors's 1st album, "VU & Nico" and others. These records were all released in the magic year of 1967, just like "Supernatural Fairy Tales". If you're a psych collector, you definitively MUST HAVE this one.

Patchy but worthwhile British psychedelia, particularly when it's on the brooding side of that sub-genre. The heavy guitars and organ put this on the path to progressive rock, but the songs are rather more on the straightforward and popish side than those that Spooky Tooth would play when Art evolved into that group. "I Think I'm Going Weird" points to the morbid streak that would become sharper in Spooky Tooth; "African Thing," with its long African-styled drum solo, is the sort of strange, at least by the standards of 1967, item that groups would throw in to show they weren't limiting themselves to traditional rock forms anymore; "Come On Up" is almost a soul-rocker throwback to the V.I.P.s days; and the title track, with its mellotrons, is as close as Art got to the trippy baroque/whimsical mood that blew through so much British psychedelia in 1967 and 1968.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

 

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(c)           The record comes in the original  poly-lined“Made in Great Britain” stock inner sleeve.

 

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

 

 

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

 

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

 

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

 

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

 

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the seams  (nothing significant)

 

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)
