Joan Armatrading inhabits the same tier of songwriter as Wendy Waldman, Karla Bonoff, Judee Sill, and to an extent, Laura Nyro (whose own records sold poorly but whose music was made mainstream by smoothed out covers by a variety of artists). She's kind of a songwriter's songwriter with a few familiar hits under her belt.

Having said that, she's a major talent, and the AllMusic review for this album makes me wonder if the author actually listened to the record. First, it begins with a dismissive gloss of the Armatrading-Nestor collaboration, forgetting in his glib language, that some of the greatest music in popular music history resulted from collaborations: Leiber & Stoller, Holland-Dozier-Holland, King-Goffin, Lennon-McCartney, Jagger-Richards, John-Taupin to name just the move obvious luminaries. The collaboration between Armatrading and Nestor may have produced "relatively short songs" like "Visionary Mountians" (1:48) and "Mister Remember Me" (2:16), but plenty of others pass the three and even the four minute mark. But at the end of the day, what relevance does length have to quality? A succinct song can have a massive impact, and many of these tunes stand among Armatrading's strongest, including "My Family," "It Could Have Been Better" (which definitely evokes Tumbleweed-era Elton but in the best possible way), and the title track.

Approaching this album with a set of rockist expectations, William Ruhlmann completely misses an incredible set of songs that exemplify the best aspects of early-1970s songwriting: lyrics that seem sincere (even if they're not actually autobiographical or "confessional," whatever the hell that means); intriguing instrumental work: Armatrading's guitar playing is a revelation, and her piano skills make me wish she'd utilized the instrument more consistently throughout her career; and tasteful arrangements that avoid the fussiness of something like James Taylor's Apple debut and instead use strings, horns, percussion, and backing vocals to augment the sentiment in the lyrics.

This album is a stunning debut; do yourself a favor and listen to it in its entirety.
